Dr. Fred Lynd, I'esearch vet erinary pathologist at the South west Medical School in San An tonio, told 133 pet club officials “it is difficult to predict the fu ture trends of research in com panion animal medicine because we have nothing to go on.’’ Support for pet research, Dr. Lynd said, has been very limited. “None of the health organiza tions are interested in this angle, particularly supporting work just for application to our pets. And, of course, the federal or state funds cannot be spent in this direction, he stressed. The program, sponsored by the Texas Association for Com panion Animals, Inc., (T.A.C.A.) and Companion Animal Research and Educational Association, Inc., (C.A.R.E.), was an invitation- only seminar conducted at the College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. E. W. Ellett, T.A.C.A. president and head of TAMU’s Small Animal Clinic, stressed at the seminar opening the organi zation serves the pet-owning public — breeders and individual owners alike. He said it was up to the club representatives, through membership drives and influence, to make a dynamic or ganization. Dr. Charles W. Riley, Fort Worth practitioner, presided at the program. Speakers included President Jack K. Williams, Vet erinary Medicine Dean Alvin A. Price, Dr. J. M. Farrell of Arling ton, Dr. James R. Collins of Houston, Dr. D. K. Chester and Dr. Ellett, both of TAMU. C.A.R.E. functions were ex plained by Dr. Farrell, who em phasized the main purpose was research into companion animal health problems. He also called for continued research into bone and joint dis ease, healing and repair of carti lage (such as disfigured ears and between the vertebrae of the backbone) disc problems, tendons which hold up the head and hold toes and legs in position and fin ally investigations into proper healing after surgery. On the bright side, Dr. Lynd noted veterinarians “know more about dog and cat nutrition than the physician does about human nutrition.” He predicted by 1981 the U.S. will need about 43,000 specialists in companion animal medicine — from dog psychiatry to derma tology.
