Government investiga tors have since traced $114,000 in one of the arrested men’s bank account back to Nixon’s cam paign. “I don’t believe it’s hurting the President’s campaign,” Mitch ell said. The former attorney general called it a “ridiculous caper” that newsmen have “blown out of all proportion.” The President’s top campaign leaders aren’t responsible, he said. “If people act without authority, then there is clearly no respon sibility of the people in command and control,” he said. Mitchell wouldn’t discuss his testimony because of a court se crecy order, but said he had an swered all questions asked by the Democrats’ lawyer in the case, Edward Bennett Williams. Attorney Henry B. Eothblatt, who represents the five men ar rested in the case, confirmed that Mitchell had answered all ques tions. Last Friday Mitchell had re fused to answer questions be cause Rothblatt had asked the court to halt any further testi mony in the case. Saturday federal judge Charles R. Richey temporarily blocked Williams from questioning the five arrested men, but allowed him to go ahead with taking dep ositions from Mitchell and others not facing criminal charges in the case. Meanwhile defense lawyer Rothblatt said he’ll call former Democratic party chief Lawrence F. O’Brien and perhaps nine oth er top Democrats to give more secret testimony in an attempt to uncover what evidence will be used against his clients.
