The South,won the classic, 1&- 12, in a battle (fating which two touchdowns were called back, a drop kick at a point after touch down was attempted and a de fender kicked the ball away from the holder on an extra point. Alvin Bowers, a fullback from Wharton, was the leading rusher ia the game. Playing for the South squad, the 5-11, 209 pound er finished the night with 78 yards on IS carries. Ernest “Bubba” Bean, the lead ing Texas schoolboy ground gain er in history, started on defense, Astros host Frisco Giants in final series Willie McCovey and the San Francisco Giants will be in the Astrodome for an important four- game series with the Houston Astros beginning Friday and run ning through Monday. This will be the Giants’ final series in the Astrodome this season. Houston will play San Fran cisco in 7:80 p.m. games on Fri day, Saturday and Monday. Sun day will be a 2 p.m. game. Friday will be San Francisco plaque night with the first 5,000 youngsters receiving a free Giant plaque. Also, Friday the contest- . agts in the Miss Astro contest will be introduced before the game. Sunday will be Family Day with g one dollar reduction on any box or reserved seat for chil dren 14 and under when accom panied by a parent It will also be Chevy Truck Day with all Chevrolet trucks driven to the game getting to park free in the Astrodome parking lot Also, Miss Astro for 1972 will be crowned before- Sunday’s game. San Francisco has been one of I the '‘‘hottest- Hubs fa the Na tional League since the All Star break. Since the return of slug ger McCovey, the Giants have been winning on a regular basis. With the potent bats of Dave Kingman, McCovey, Ken Hender son, Bobby Bonds and Tito Puen tes and the pitching of Sam Mc Dowell, Jim Barr and Don Bryant the Giants have regained the re spect they owned last season when they won the West title. Carl Roaches, the 5-9, 160 pounder from Houston Smiley, started for the South at safety, next to Bean. He also saw limited offensive action late in the game, carrying the ball once for a two- yard loes. . Roaches wss the deep man on kickoffs, with Bean on one side and Port Arthur's Oklahoma- bound Joe Washington on the other. After the opening kickoff, the North deliberately angled the rest of their kickoffs to Washing ton. avoiding Bean and Roaches. Washington carried 14 times for 62 yards, and he arms voted the game's outstanding back by a wide margin. Pat Thomas, playing both ways for the North squad, carried four times for a net of five yards. But he showed his class in the pass receiving department, beating Bean for a 41-yard toes and also hauling in a 23 yarder. Thomas is a 5-10, 174 pounder from Plano. Richard Osborns, the San An tonio Lae sensation, played split end for the South the entire game, but he was thrown to only three times, all in the first quarter. The 6-5, 205 pounder received the praise of all observers during workouts, and he showed some fine moves during the game, but he finished with taro receptions for 16 yards. Other Aggie signees in the con test were running back Mark Martin, a 5-11, 190-pound CoHna graduate, and Denais Smelser, a 6-4, 255 pounder from Odessa Permian, who started at offensive tackle and defensive end, for the North; and Jim Norman, a 6-2, 230-pound guard from Ennis, and Henry Tracy, a 6-2, 210-pound guard from Houston Sam Hous ton, who started at center, for the South.
