Eight in North-South tilt
Aggies play in all-star games
Eight incoming Aggie fresh
men will play in Thursday’s
Texas High School Coaches Asso
ciation North-South football game
in the Astrodome.
Among the A&M recruits are
Dennis Smelser, Odessa Permian
tackle; Ernest (Bubba) Bean,
Kirbyville running back; Alvin
Bowers, Wharton fullback-line
backer; Carl Roaches, Houston
Smiley running back; Mark Mar
tin, Celina running back; Richard
Osborne, San Antonio Lee split
end; Jim Norman, Ennis line
backer; Pat Thomas, Plano run
ning back; and Henry Tracy,
Houston Sam Houston guard.
Because of the new NCAA rule
making freshmen eligible for
varsity play, and because of a
continuing buildup of interest in
this annual game, there appears
to be more fascination over this
year’s game than in any of the
previous 38 classics.
The 64 players are divided into
North and South teams. Tommy
Watkins will coach the North All-
Stars, assisted by Jerry McWil
liams, Bobby Hayworth and Da
vid Baugh. The South All-Stars
will be coached by Jack Hays,
assisted by Charles Forehand,
Charles F. Brand and Ed Derrick.
Halftime ceremonies will in
clude performances by the Sam
Houston Houstonettes drum and
bugle unit, representing the
North, and Westbury Rebelettes
drum and bugle unit, represent
ing the South.

■
Maybe you know her as Miss
Lizzie or Granny Hill or Aunt
Mary Jones. Through the years
she’s been a tower of strength in
her community . . . helping with
the sick, sharing with the poor
. . . a friend to all.
She doesn’t seem to worry
about the future, just looks to
the brighter side and is happy.
You envy her, thinking she gets
much out of life that you miss.
Does she have a secret, a magic
formula?
No, you can’t say that her fel
lowship with God is a secret, for
God is for everyone!
Would you like to possess some of her strength to look
ahead, to face danger and conquer fear? The Church can
help you reach this goal. All through the years it has
strengthened mankind and helped him find the best in him
self and in others.
