A gold medalist in 1968, a sil ver medalist in 1964 and a world record holder sin«e 1967, Mat son’s best put of the day was 67-5%. He threw 69-0 % in the preliminaries Friday, but first day marks do not carry over to the finals. This is the exception rather than the usual practice in track meets. George Woods of the Pacific Coast Club in Long Beach, Cali fornia, won first place in the event with a throw of 70-1 %. His teammate, A1 Feuerbach, was second at 68-10%. Chicago’s Brian Oldfield, a relative new comer in shot put power, edged Matson by placing third at 67- 10%. “I see no reason for staying in shape and throwing,” said the 6-7, 270-pound Matson, now 27 years old. “I would be very surprised if I ever competed again. I’m not improving. It’s Rolf is signed by SF 49ers Rolf Krueger, younger brother of veteran defensive tackle Char lie Krueger, has signed a con tract with the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League. Krueger, who played on the 1967 Southwest Conference Champion A&M team, played out his option with the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1971 season. At 6-4 and 250 pounds, Rolf is 10 years younger than Charlie, and will be used as a defensive end, a spokesman for the 49ers said. The Krueger brothers both were named to All-America teams while in college. Both played on league championship squads at A&M. A third brother, Kent, will be gin his freshman year at A&M this fall. He is 6-5 and weighs 260 pounds. The 49ers announced that two high draft 1973 choices would be given to St. Louis in compensa tion for Rolf Krueger. been five years since I threw the record toss and my timing is off. I had considered retiring after the Olympics anyway. “There are so many guys near 70 feet now, I don’t know if I’ll be able to compete with them,” he continued. “They throw bet ter than I did. I can offer no ex cuses. I just didn’t throw well.” LAKEVIEW CLUB 3 Miles N. On Tabor Road Saturday Night: Stonewall Jackson & The Minutemen From 9 - 1 p. m.
