A&M geologist participates
in mid-Atlantic expedition
Dr. Robert B. Scott, A&M geol
ogist, will be among a group of
marine scientists from five na
tions exploring a giant submerg
ed moutain range in the mid-At
lantic for valuable mineral de
posits and clues to the origin of
earthquakes.
The 10-week expedition is part
of the National Oceanic and At-
mospheric Administration’s
Trans-Atlantic Geotraverse proj
ect. TAG was initiated in 1970
to carry out the first comprehen
sive study of the ocean bottom
across an entire ocean basin.
This year’s phase, beginning
July 5, will be made at the Mid-
Atlantic Ridge, part of an un
dersea mountain range which ex
tends around the world—the larg
est geographic feature on eai’th.
NOAA officials said the expe
dition also will probe the conti
nental margin of Northwest Af
rica to determine the original
edge of the African continent
which has remained hidden for
about 200 million years.
Dr. Scott and NOAA research
ers will be joined by scientists
from England, Portugal, Spain
and Mauritania, along with ocean
ographic personnel from the Uni
versities of Miami, Wisconsin and
Connecticut.
Scott, an associate professor
who came to TAMU last fall from
Florida State, will participate in
the third leg of the cruise, which
begins in the Canai’y Islands and
concludes in Miami.
Scientists aboard the NOAA
ship “Discoverer” will lower in
struments to collect samples of
the newly solidified rocks to pros
pect for sea-floor minerals at the
Mid-Atlantic Ridge in water
depths ranging from hundreds
to thousands of feet. They also
will use electronic instruments to
chart the shape of the Mid-Atlan
tic Ridge and to measure the in
tensity of the associated magne
tic and gravity fields.

the Housing Office.
Housing manager Allan M.
Madeley said that an expected
heavy demand for residence hall
space and handling of applica
tions on a date received basis
makes early signup important.
“Summer school room reserva
tions do not apply to the fall se
mester in any way,” Madeley
added.
Freshmen who have been ac
cepted for fall enrollment but who
have not submitted fall applica
tion cards should turn them in at
once. Cards are available at the
Admissions Office.
The housing manager remind
ed that July 31 is the deadline
for cancellation of a fall room
reservation without forfeit of
room deposit.
