OPERATION ALLIGATOR is the name ot this tooth extraction. The 140-pound alliga
tor of the Vancouver Aquarium was off his food, and the removal of some bad teeth
and a coin from the throat solved the dilemma. Performing the operation is Dr. Peter
Dow, left, assisted by curator Gil Hewlett, Dr. A1 McNeil and Bob Cant. (AP Wire-

h»« been appointed by the Nation
al Academy of Sciences-National
Research Council as a delegate
to an international meeting in
Poland.
U. S. delegation to the General
Asaembly, International Union of
Radio Science Aug. 21-29.
Dr. Rouse, director of ARM’s
Remote Sensing Center, has been
speech to the session on remote
sensing ef the earth. He also will
assist in preparation of the tech
nical proceedings documents.
NASA has decided to proceed
with detailed planning of a large
multi-purpoee optical toleecope to
be launched and serviced by the
Space Shuttle in the 1980a.
The Large Space Telescope
(LST) will be able to look at
galaxies 100 times fainter than
those seen by the most powerful
ground-based optical telescope.
Within the solar system, it will
be able to provide long-term
monitoring of atmospheric phe
nomena on Venus, Mars, Jupiter
and Saturn.
Scientists expect the LST to
contribute significantly to the
study of energy processes that
occur in galactic nuclei; the study
of early stage# of stellar and
solar system formation; observa
tion of such highly evolved ob
jects as supernova remnants
and white dwarfs; and other
studies relevant to the origin of
the universe.
The LST will weigh between
9,000 and 11,000 kilograms (20,-
000 and 26,000 pounds) and have
a length of 12 to 16 meters (40
to 52 feet) and a diameter of 3.6
to 4 meters (12 to 13 feet). Its
most important optical element
will be a diffraction-limited mir
ror approximately three meters
(ten feet) in diameter.
The guidance systems will he
capable of holding onto a target
for extended periods within 0.005
seconds of arc. (This is the
angle made by a dime viewed at
a distance from Washington to
Boston.)
Solar panels will provide elec
trical power to the LST, and its
images will be transmitted to
Earth by television.
The spacecraft will orbit Earth
at an altitude of 648 to 778 kil
ometers (350 to 420 nautical
miles) at an inclination of 28.5
degrees.
The manned Space Shuttle,
which NASA is developing for
operations beginning in the late
1970s, will be used to launch,
teat and retrieve the LST from
orbit aa required for repair, re
furbishment, and updating of its
instruments.

The Church..For a Fuller Life..For You..
The Past,
the Present,
and HOD
Especially on Independence Day, we tend
to regard our problems as unique, don't we?
And in the bustling, troubled world of today
w« think of the past as pleasant and serene.
This "rush-hour" scene of 1900 seems
miniature when compared with the urban
traffic jam* of today. But it illustrates that the
"olden" days were not entirely rosy. Indeed,
sanitation was poor, infant mortality preva
lent, roads unpaved and one-room school-
houses common.
Yet our ancestors, with an optimistic spirit
based on faith in God. met and solved these
problems, and we are indebted to them.
Today we face a different set of prob
lems, and there’s another big difference: the
impact of the Church on our lives has waned.
YET TODAY WE NEED THE CHURCH MORE
THAN EVER—to provide us with a voice of
hope and understanding.
