(Editor’s note: This is the third
in a series of four stories cover
ing various activities of the As
sociation of Former Students.)
When former students of Texas
A&M proceed out into the world,
they carry with them a fellowship
bond that unites them with Ag
gies in every walk of life.
A confident handshake and a
prompt self-introduction quickly
identifies them to other former
students.
Exemplifying this desire of Ag
gies (male or female) to remain
steadfast to A&M and to each
other are the more than 180
Texas A&M Clubs located all
over the globe.
Through these organizations,
former students band together to
learn about current happenings
at A&M and to develop programs
of support for the university.
The club structure provides
young alumni with opportunities
to gain leadership experience in
furthering projects for the bene
fit of A&M.
Forty-seven area councilmen
maintain liaison between the
clubs and the Association Board
of Directors.
Harry J. Green Jr., ’52, Asso
ciation field director, assists the
area councilmen and club officers
by lining up students, faculty and
staff members to speak to the
clubs and by otherwise providing
materials and information on uni
versity and association activities.
Many A&M Clubs support
scholarships for students attend
ing A&M.
Clubs also sponsor events to
recognize top scholars and out
standing teachers in their area.
Another example of the interest
former students exhibit for A&M
and their fellow students is the
class programs sponsored by the
Association.
Class Agents represent 67 grad
uating classes on the Association
Council. Forty-three of those class
agents were on campus in Febru
ary of this year to discuss better
ways of serving their classes and
A&M.
Members of the Class of ’72
recently elected Tommy Orr to
represent them on the council.
The class agents keep in touch

Ocean topics
to be discussed
at conference
A&M this week hosts the second
annual meeting of the University-
National Oceanographic Labora
tory System, a planning and co
ordinating organization for major
U. S. oceanographic facilities.
The two-day session, which
opened Wednesday in the library,
is expected to attract representa
tives from approximately 60
institutions, noted Dr.Richard A.
Geyer, head of TAMU’s Ocean
ography Department.
Geyer said the UNOLS confer
ence will include about 10 insti
tutions participating in the
TAMU - sponsored Mini - NOLS,
Texas’ equivalent of the national
organization.
Major topics include ship op
erations and scheduling for max
imum utilization of research
vessels and to make them avail
able to all institutions having
need for them, Geyer pointed out.
He said special emphasis will be
placed on use of craft equipped
for coastal zone research.
