■ 'r'-i - THE BATTALION Tuesday, March 28, 1972 College Station, Texas Page 3 SSIF1B b ICE ion is lent” I ffim in Austin Saturday Track team finishes third in own meet The crippled Texas Aggies, who finished third behind Rice and Baylor in the four-team univer sity division of the College Sta tion Relays here last Saturday, go limping into Austin Saturday to compete wtih Rice and Texas in a triangular meet. Kgs learn wishbone well; first scrimmage a success Either Emory Bellard is a master teacher or his Texas Ag gies are quick to learn the wish bone formation because A&M’s first offensive team ran rough- “ shod over the second defensive unit Saturday. In a controlled scrimmage, the first offense scored on 9 of 11 possessions, starting at its own 35-yard line each time, and rolled up 601 yards rushing on 52 car ries for an 11.6-yard average. The first defense, meanwhile, stopped the second offense on 13 of 14 possessions. The second offense scored on its third try when Gary Whitehead drove over the one-yard line. But, linebacker Grady Hoermann intercepted two passes and tackle Boice best re- overcomes Id? lily at Come lay at ’clock, days, s, we UH Cornhuskers nine HOUSTON (A*) — Nebraska overcame a six-run deficit in the sixth inning, only to fall again in the bottom half of the inning as the University of Houston took a wild 12-10 college baseball vic tory which saw both teams com bine for 30 hits. The Cougars had a 7-1 advan tage with a six-run explosion in the third but the visiting Corn huskers rallied for four runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to gain the lead. covered one fumble and inter cepted another in mid-air and ran 37 yards for a touchdown. Fullback Brad Dusek led the rushing assault with 220 yards on 12 ties, including a 65-yard touchdown gallop. Sophomore-to- be John Bounds rolled up 147 yards in 11 runs and scored five times, the longest on a 35-yard scamper. Mark Green, Bounds’ running mate at halfback, ran 16 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Lex James ran three times for 28 yards and guided two scoring drives before a pulled hamstring muscle sidelined him. Tim Trim- mier moved up from the second team to quarterback the top out fit and run for 66 yards on 10 tries and completed 3 of 8 passes for 53 yards. The offensive line not only opened gaping holes for the backs, but at times literally blew the second defense backwards. That front force had Tommy Goodwin at split end, Homer May at tight end, Mike Park and Ralph Sacra at the tackles, Todd Christopher and Buster Callaway at the guards and Skip Kuehn at center. Besides Hoermann and Best, the hard-hitting first defense had ends Max Bird and James Dub- cak, tackle Bill Wiedbold, line backers Dennis Carruth and Kent Finley, cornerbacks Corky Shef field and Robert Murski and safe ties Larry Ellis and Dwight La- Bauve. “We’re definitely not going all out this week,” coach Charley Thomas said Monday. “We may use some newcomers on our relay teams and we may cut down on the number of events some of our runners will enter.” Among the doubtfuls are Mar vin Mills, Scotty Jones, Horace Grant, Wayne Mills and Doug Brodhead. Marvin Mills, after winning the 100-yard dash in 9.5 last Saturday night, pulled up and didn’t finish the 220. Jones, who has run a 14.1 this season, pulled a hamstring in the 120-yard high hurdles. Brodhead, who won the 440- yard dash in 47.7, didn’t run on the mile relay because of a hurt foot. Grant and Wayne Mills did not compete in the relay either because of pulled hamstrings. David Morris is still sidelined by a pulled muscle suffered in the Border Olympics early this month and is not expected back until late May. “We hope we can get through this week without any more in juries so we can be ready to run at full strength in the Texas Relays next weekend,” Thomas said. Thomas was undecided early in the week just how the Aggies would line up in the two relays. Billy Porter didn’t run on the 440 relay unit last Saturday but did compete in the 100-yard dash and on the mile relay. In the College Station Relays, the Aggies just couldn’t match Baylor or Rice with the injury- riddled unit, especially in the field events. In the high jump, where A&M is usually strong, only Phil Mc Guire scored on the 5-3-1 basis. McGuire, favoring an injured knee, jumped 6-7 for third place while Baylor’s sensational fresh man, Gary Kafer, cleared the bar at 6-11. Glen Ray of Rice took second wtih a jump of 6-9. In a questionable judgment by the Relays director, Dave Roberts was given a fourth jump to clear 16-0 after missing three previous tries, and made it to take first place. A&M’s Harold McMahan took second wtih 15-0. In the 440-yard relay, A&M and TCU were both clocked at 41.0 but the medal went to TCU. In another close decision, Wil lie Blackmon was awarded first place in the 880-yard run over TCU’s David Hardin both with a time of 1:51.2. A&M’s mile relay team, though having only one regular in the lineup, almost pulled an upset in the event. The team of Robert Brew, Alan Swagerty, Porter and Blackmon led after the first two legs and then began to fall behind at the finish copping third place in the event. Six university division records were set in the meet which was the second in the history. The most outsanding was Rice’s Paul Geis who chopped 23 seconds off the old three-mile run record in a time of 13:50.7. There were two double winners with Rice’s Ken Stadel taking the shot put and discus while Paul Stevens of TCU copped both the 440-yard intermediate and 120-yard high hurdles. Warrior coach not satisfied with success over Bucks MILWAUKEE (A 1 ) — Golden State had far more success than most of the rest of the National Basketball Association against the Milwaukee Bucks this season, but Coach A1 Attles thinks his War riors could have done even better. The Bucks and Warriors, who will open their best-of-seven Western Conference playoffs here Tuesday night, split their season series 2-2. The defending league champion Bucks were 61-17 against all other teams in win ning the Midwest Division crown. Perhaps the most revealing statistic is that Kareem Abdul- Jabbar, the Bucks’ 7-foot-2 cen ter, averaged 34-8 points per game to win the NBA scoring title but was held to a 25.5 aver age in four games against the Warriors. “The fact they’ve beaten us twice wtih Kareem nine points under his average indicates we BATTALION CLASSIFIED CHILD CARE SPECIAL NOTICE EDGAR CAYCE — Inquirers study gro< Monday and Wednesday, 7 :30 ] H6-3307. up Call 101t5 Harvey, please come home. The Warriors will counter Jabbar with the 6-foot-ll Nate Thurmond, described by Milwau kee Coach Larry Costello as “probably the best defensive center around.” Thurmond also is one of the best outside shooters among the league’s big men. Attles, however, indicated he would resist the temptation to try to draw Abdul-Jabbar away from the boards by letting Thur mond fire from long range. “If I were coaching against us,” Attles said, “I’d have to see how Nate was hitting before I’d send a man out after him. The Warriors achieved one of their victories over the Bucks when Thurmond didn’t even play. They moved the 6-foot-10 Clyde Lee from forward to center, where he completely took the boards away from Abdul-Jabbar. “All you have to do is look at the films to understand why,” Costello said. “We didn’t block him out, and that’s one thing we’re just going to have to do is keep Lee away from the boards.” Sports schedule Tuesday Tennis: TCU, Fort Worth Football: Spring workout, 4:00 Wednesday Football: Spring workout, 4:00 Thursday Baseball: Air Force, San An tonio, doubleheader, 1:00 Friday Baseball: St. Mary’s, San An tonio, doubleheader, 5:00 Saturday Track: Triangular meet, Rice-Texas, Austin SWC standings Team W L Texas 3 0 TCU 5 1 Rice 4 2 A&M 3 3 Baylor 2 4 SMU 1 5 Tech 0 3 State Farm is still paying big car insurance dividends to eligible Texas policy holders on expiring six-month policies.
