Th Aggies dropped the double-
header end of the three-game
Southwest Conference baseball
series Friday with the Texas
Christian Homed Frogs, but they
bounced back Saturday to win
the final contest, 5-3.
Charlie Kelley didn’t have the
luck of the Irish with him St.
Patrick’s Day, because in spite
of his six-hit, no-walk, 11-strike
out performance, the senior right
hander suffered his third loss of
the season to go with a pair of
wins, TCU won 6-3 in extra in
nings.
In the second game of Friday’s
twinbill, Bruce Katt gave up 10
hits in five innings, but his team
mates’ errors made all seven of
the runs he yielded unearned. The
senior southpaw is 2-2 for the
year. The Frogs won that one,
10-4.
Jackie Binks, a sophomore left
hander, went eight innings Satur
day, striking out nine and walk
ing six, while allowing four hits
and two runs. Binks is 2-1, while
the Aggies are now 9-6 for the
year.
In the first game Friday, Kel
ley got off to something of a
shaky start, allowing two hits in
the first frame. He settled down
after that, facing 23 batters in
the next seven innings. There
were two men he didn’t retire;
one was hit by a pitch and the
other, catcher Dana Carden, poked
a home run over the right field
fence in the second inning.
At one stretch, Kelley mowed
down 16 batters in a row. The
Aggies, meanwhile, were in the
process of getting six hits and
leaving 14 runners stranded on
base. They did push a run across
in the fifth.
Kelley got on on a base hit
and was forced at second by
Butch Ghutzman’s grounder to
short. Ghutzman met the same
fate as a result of Jim Atter-
bury’s ground ball to second.
Then, R. J. Englert got a base
hit to left. A walk to Jim Hacker
loaded the bases, and Atterbury
scored on an error. A&M left the
sacks when Carroll Lilly ground
ed to second.
The Frogs opened up for five
tallies in the ninth after the score
was tied 1-1 at the end of the
regulation seven innings. Tom
Butler got a hit up the middle,
but Don Bodenhamer popped up
trying to sacrifice him to second.
Englert misplayed Jimmy Torres’
drive to right-center, and the
triple scored one.
Pat Carden, Dana’s twin broth
er, was awarded first base on
catcher’s interference to put run
ners on first and third. Mike
Turner hit a grounder to third,
but Hacker's throw to the plate
was late. Dub Adcock grounded
out third to first for the second
out, but Dana Carden came back
to do more damage.
The catcher got a clean base
hit to center, but Englert at
tempted to scoop the ball up with
his throwing hand. The center
fielder missed the ball, though,
and it rolled all the way to the
fence while Carden was circling
the bases.
The Aggies scored twice in the
ninth, but with the bases loaded
and none out, Karl Bystrom, Mike
Schraeder and Sandy Bate struck
out to end A&M's hopes for a
gutty victory.
The listless play continued in
the nightcap, with Katt being the
next victim of errors and lack of
hitting. TCU waited until the
fourth inning before getting a
run, but then it was four of them
on four hits and three errors.
The next time up, the Frogs
dented the plate three times,
using four hits and still another
fielding miscue by the Aggies.
The damage wasn’t restricted to
Katt, as Bobby Wittkamp gave up
three runs on two hits and a pair
of walks.
A&M scored in the fifth on a
single by Jimmy Langford and
an error by the TCU right fielder.
With two outs, pinch hitter Gene
Reinarz hit a single to right to
bring Langford in. Three more
runs in the seventh weren’t
enough, as the Aggies capitalized
on two hits, an error and two
walks.
Binks got better support Satur
day, and the Aggies upped their
conference mark to 1-2. Both
teams got on the board in the
first inning, with Reinarz coming
in on Hacker’s double after being
walked by Grace.
The Frogs drew blanks until
the ninth, when Binks tired.
Charlie Jenkins pitched to one
hitter before Katt came in to put
out the fire. Two runs scored in
the process, but the rally was
not sufficient to offset the three-
run eighth inning the Aggies en
joyed.
Ghutzman walked and was sac
rificed to second by Reinarz. Eng
lert got a base hit to right to
bring Ghutzman in before Hacker
grounded out. Atterbury’s single
scored Englert, and a passed ball
and a throwing error on the
catcher moved the Aggie left
fielder to third.
Schraeder walked, and he and
Atterbury pulled off a delayed
double steal. Schraeder tried for
second, but the throw was cut
off in an attempt to stop Atter
bury from scoring. The toss to
the plate was late, and Schraeder
moved to third on the peg.
Top hitter in the series for
A&M was Englert, who pounded
out six hits in 11 times at bat.
Langford came through with five
base raps in 10 trips to the plate,
while Atterbury contributed three
hits in five times up.
