THE BATTALION
Jordans use brains and bullets while at Aggieland
When A&M students Nancy
and Wayne Jordan study, grade
points stack up. At play, they
make lead fly.
Mr. and Mrs. since January,
the Jordans are top scorers of
the Aggie men and women’s rifle
teams.
Wayne and the former Nancy
Lambert first met in November,
1970, at the Military Science De
partment rifle range.
“It works out real well,” ob
served Jordan, a 3.96 grade aver
age senior in agricultural eco
nomics. “We make a lot of trips
together.”
“. . . To places we would never
go otherwise,” chimed in Mrs.
Jordan, a sophomore accounting
major and leading shooter on the
TAMU girls rifle team. She has
a 3.26 grade point average in
A&M’s 4.0 system, while shoot
ing, serving on the Dean of
Women’s Council and, with
Wayne’s help, home-making.
Nancy was the only member of
the 1970 Katy High School class
to attend A&M and the first girl
from Katy to enroll here.
The Jordan’s rifle team com
mitments include three after
noons and 12 hours practice a
week.
They will be among eight Ag
gie marksmen S. Sgt. Max Schill
will take to the 23rd Southwest
Invitational Smallbore Tourna
ment this weekend at El Paso.
Wayne has two meets remain
ing to put his 555 average shoot
ing (out of 600) to work for the
A&M men’s team. He has been
accepted to graduate school here,
which gives Nancy two more
years with the girls’ team that
captured third at the nationals
in Kansas earlier this year.
Wayne hopes to help Schill
with coaching duties and brags
on the girls’ team potential.
“Our girls’ team will probably
win national within the next two
years, at least,” the former state
4-H rifle champ remarked. “They
are all freshmen except Nancy.
They show marked and steady
improvement.”
Averaging 510 in recent match
es, she shot 618 the last time out.
Schill said Mrs. Jordan has
blossomed as a rifle shooter in
the last three months, while
Wayne has continued at “his
steady, outstanding pace.” He
also indicated overall teamwork
has improved recently.
“Everybody has the same
amount of shooting ability,”
Schill believes. “Individual con
centration and effort determines
the difference between winners
and losers.”
“Our team participation is
more a hobby than anything
else,” observed Jordan, a com
petitive shooter 13 of his 22
years. He fired in 4-H and NRA
competition at Mason High
School, which had the state 4-H
rifle champion team in 1967 when
he notched the state title. The
other three were girls.
