Sailing club open to learners, interested
By GEORGE HOWARD
Sailors are a breed of their
own. Just talking to them gives
you the feeling of sitting in a
sailboat with the wind blowing
in your face.
And it’s easy to talk to mem
bers of the A&M Sailing Club.
There are no restrictions on
joining. “Anyone with an inter
est in sailing or willing to
learn can join,” says Rick Brisn
coe, club president. “We have
training sessions for beginners
as well as for those who are well
experienced in the art of sailing.
Our primary goal is to teach and
train our members for competi
tion in intercollegiate sailboat
racing.”
Membership in the club is $5
a semester. There is an added
cost for boat rentals. The rental
fee for the club-owned Dolphins
is $3 a day and for the 420s is
$4 a day. Rental fees help pay
for upkeep of the boats.
The club has 50 members. It
increases to about 100 during the
summer months. “Membership is
not limited to A&M students,”
said Briscoe in a recent inter
view. “Many of the members
during the summer are families
from the surrounding area.”
Training sessions take place on
the Municipal Lake on South Col
lege Avenue or at Lake Sommer-
ville. Several of the Dolphin
Seniors are housed at the Muni
cipal Lake while the larger 420s
are docked at Lake Sommerville.
The 14-foot Dolphins are used
to teach beginners the funda
mentals of sailing. The 420s with
18-year-olds can’t serve
on juries, court decides
two sails are used to train two-
man crews for intercollegiate
racing.
Members compete against the
University of Houston, Rice and
the University of Texas in an
intercollegiate sailboat regatta
in the spring. The club also sends
members to Louisiana to com
pete in several regattas.
The club meets on Thursday
nights at 7:30 in room 105 of
the Geology building. Their meet
ings include discussions about
course
sailing techniques. Often movies
or slides are used to demonstrate
how to best take advantage of
the wind.
Most of the club’s activities
take place on Sunday afternoons,
weather permitting. Sailing is a
year-round sport and no other
sportsmen live as close to the
weather and are more affected
by it.
AUSTIN, Tex. <A>) _ The con
stitutional amendment that gave
18-year-olds the vote did not
give them a right to serve on
Texas juries, the Court of Crim
inal Appeals ruled Wednesday.
The court upheld the burglary
conviction of Joe Shelby of Lub
bock, 18, who sought a re-trial
on grounds persons 18-21 were
excluded from the jury that as
sessed him five year’s imprison
ment.
Presiding Judge John F. On
ion Jr. said that a state law lim
iting jury service to persons 21
and over still applies.
Shelby’s attorney said there
was a conflict with a new law
requiring county authorities to
make up jury wheels from lists
of registered voters.
“We cannot agree that such a
conflict exists,” Onion wrote for
the unanimous court.
“We find nothing in such stat
utes to require the designated of
ficials to ignore the qualifications
of jurors . . . and to automatically
include in the jury wheel all
names on the voter registration
list regardless of the official’s
knowledge of lack of age, felony
conviction, lack of citizenship,
etc., on the part of an individ
ual,” he said.
Defense lawyers maintained
that the 26th amendment to the
U.S. Constitution, which gave 18-
year-olds the right to vote, also
gave them the right to serve.
But the court disagreed.
“Surely the states still retain
the right to determine the qual
ifications of the jurors to serve
in its own courts and may place
the burden of such public duty
on certain age groups, even pro
viding exemption, though not dis
qualification, on account of age.”

Krist, reported the settlement.
North American Rockwell had
no comment on the settlement.
Krist said Betty Grissom orig
inally filed a total of four suits.
Two were filed in Florida on be
half of herself as the widow and
survivor and on behalf of Gris
som’s estate. The other two were
filed in California, where North
American Rockwell built the
spacecraft at its plant in Downey.
The latter two were on behalf of
Grissom’s two young children.
Last May, a Florida district
court rejected Mrs. Grissom’s per
sonal suit because a two-year
statute of limitations had run
out. It allowed the estate suit to
stand.
Krist said the terms of the
settlement will give Mrs. Gris
som $100,000 on the remaining
Florida suit and $125,000 for each
of her two sons in the California
suits.
