Pag-e 10 College Station, Texas Wednesday, March 8, 1972 THE BATTALION Aggie netters drop windy match to Michigan, By BILL HENRY Assistant Sports Editor College Station wind caused havoc with the elusive tennis ball and the A&M tennis team here Tuesday afternoon in a losing effort to Big Ten champion Michigan 5-4 in dual competition. It was a proud day for two Aggie freshmen, Bill Wright and Billy Hoover, as they were dou ble winners, but for two upper classmen, Dick Fikes and Danny Courson, it was a different story. Not only did both upperclass men lose their singles matches but also lost their doubles match after being ahead 4-1 in the first set. “I was very unhappy with the performance of Fikes and Cour son today,” Coach Omar Smith said. “Fm very disappointed in their team leadership.” Going into the doubles compe tition, the A&M specialty, match es were tied, 3-3. Smith felt very confident of upsetting the talent laden team from Ann Arbor. In the beginning it looked as though Fikes and Courson were going to annihilate the team of Jeff Ross and Dick Raverby after taking a commanding 4-1 advan tage, needing only two of the next six games to win. Michi gan won four straight, taking the lead 5-4. A&M won the next game to tie the score at 5-5 and a final chance to pull the match out of the fire. This was not A&M’s day as Michigan took the next two and a 7-5 set win. Ross and Raverby easily took the second match, 6-4, thus drop ping A&M’s dual meet record to 5-5 after beginning the season 3-0. In the Hoover-Wright match, the duo had to come from behind to win their first match on the last point of a tie-breaker. The first team to score five points automatically wins the match. It went down to the wire as the two freshmen pulled it out, 5-4. Dick Fikes’ singles match was also won on the tie-breaker, but this time A&M came out on the short end. It was a gallant ef fort on his part, however, as he was behind 5-1, then won five straight games, gaining the lead, 6-5. He lost the next game and the tie-breaker, 5-0. Michigan’s record stands at 1-1 after losing to Corpus Christi University, 5-2, Monday. “I felt real good about the vic tory,” Coach Bryan Heisner said after the contest. “It is only the second day we’ve played outdoors and I’m confident that the team will improve with more outside work.” The results of the dual meet were: Joel Ross, Michigan, de feated Dick Fikes, 7-6, 6-2; Jeff Miller of Michigan defeated Dan ny Courson, 6-4, 6-2; Bill Wright, A&M, defeated Tim Ott, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4; Billy Hoover of A&M de feated Dick Raverby, Michigan, 5- 7, 7-6, 6-4; Tommy Connell A&M defeated Kevin Semch,^ 6- 3; and Jerry Karzen of Mieti. gan defeated Jere Mills, 6-1,6-1, In doubles action; Fikes ati Courson lost to Ross and Raver. hy, 5-7, 4-6; Wright and Hoover defeated Karzen and Senich, ?•!, 6-4; and Miller and Ott defeats Mills and Park, 6-2, 6-1.
