Pitching, big innings
give Aggies double win
By JOHN CURYLO
Battalion Sports Editor
A big inning in each game of
Wednesday’s doubleheader with
Iowa State, coupled with tough
pitching and an errorless defense,
gave the Aggie baseball team
7-3 and 13-2 wins in the first
action of the season.
Charlie Kelley hurled the entire
seven innings of the first game,
giving up five hits and five
walks to go with his 11 strike
outs. Bruce Katt threw eight of
the nine frames in the second
game, allowing no runs, two hits
and two walks. The southpaw
fanned eight.
In the first game, the fourth
was the inning of plenty for
A&M, with Coach Tom Chandler
ushering 11 batters to the plate.
Six of the seven hits came in this
frame. Sandy Bate, Jim Hacker,
Carroll Lilly and Terry Overton
all hit singles to open the attack.
Kelley followed with a fielder’s
choice, before Jimmy Langford
bunted one to Cyclone pitcher
Mike Gillespie, who got the worst
of the bad footing. Tommy O’Jib-
way got on when James made an
other of his four errors. R. J.
Englert was given a base on a
similar miscue by third baseman
Mike Curran.
Butch Ghutzman popped to
third, and Bate struck out, but
Hacker’s second base hit ended in
a rundown of O’Jibway to end the
spree. By this time, the plate had
been dented six times on as many
hits and three errors.
Katt faced only 27 batters in the
eight innings he pitched, and
Iowa State had only one man
reach third and one other make
it to second until the last inning.
The Cyclones managed two fly
balls for outs—one a pop foul to
the catcher, Neil McKittrick and
the other a short fly to Ghutz
man at first—as the other bat
ters went down on strikeouts or
grounders.
Englert, hitless in four trips
to the plate in the first game,
connected four of the five times
he batted in the second game.
The center fielder had a double
and two triples, in addition to
driving in five runs and scoring
four times.
Bate was three-for-four with
two runs batted in and two scored,
while Langford got two hits in
five batting appearances and
Ghutzman opened up for two base
raps in four times at bat.
The eighth inning sealed the
game, with nine Aggie runs being
scored. Thirteen A&M players
batted in the frame. The score
was 4-0 after seven and one half
frames, but five hits and two
errors put it out of reach for the
Cyclones.

two were out. A triple by Eng

Hacker, both to right-center field,
