McLeod was ordered to bring
with him records of any loans
made by his bank to Mutscher
and McGinty, while Hamilton was
instructed to bring telephone com
pany records of the three defend
ants for June through September
1969.
In a copyrighted story in De
cember, the Houston Post said
that Mutscher and McGinty ne
gotiated for a $60,000 loan from
Moody’s private bank last May,
just before three bills backed by
Moody and Day passed the Texas
Legislature.
Two of these bills were drafted
at Moody’s direction, the Post
said. One authorized putting
additional state money in Moody’s
bank and the other bill created a
utility district in Galveston
County,
Day, a member of the executive
committee of Moody’s private
bank, W. L. Moody and Co. Bank
ers, hand-carried the loan docu
ment from McGinty’s office,
according to sworn statements the
Post said it had obtained.
The loan agreement was never
consummated, bank officials said.
In her subpoena, Carol Price
was ordered to bring photostats
of any notes made July 28, 1969
to the three defendants, Mut-
scher’s father, and F. C. Schulte,
another Mutscher aide.
She was also ordered to bring
originals of five letters addressed
to Joe Novotny and signed by the
three defendants, Schulte and the
senior Mutscher. Novotny was
president of National Banker’s
Life.
The loan defense subpoena is
sued was for Jim Reynolds, chief
of committee clerks of the Texas
House. Three other House offi
cials were subpoenaed Tuesday.
Reynolds was ordered to bring
all records of the banks and bank
ing committee of the House while
the 61st Legislature was in
session, both in the regular term
and two special sessions.
It was during this period that
the legislature passed two bank
ing bills which figured in the
Texas stock scandals.
All five of the defense sub
poenas for the trial have been
requested by Joe Shannon Jr
attorney for Shannon, no relation.
Basket weaving
course offered
A&M students and interested
patrons will take up basket weav
ing with Clotilde Barrett this
weekend through the Memorial
Student Center Contemporary
Arts Committee.
Mrs. Barrett, one of the fore
most weavers in the Southwest,
will lead CAC workshop partici
pants through contemporary in
terpretations of ancient and
primitive cloth technology.
Committee chairman David
Dacus said twice-daily sessions
Friday, Saturday and Sunday in
Room 3D of the MSC will cover
twining and weaving techniques,
netting and braiding. Materials
will be furnished free to TAMU
students with activity cards.
The fee for others is $20. In
formation is available at the Stu
dent Program Office, where reg
istration is under way.
Student service fee proposal
will be voted on tonight
Student Senate President John Sharp has outlined specific
proposals about the student services fee that will be presented to the
senate at its meeting tonight.
The proposed $9,000 that had been previously allocated to the
Singing Cadets will be cut completely. Another $8,000 from the
Singing Cadets allocation will go to the YMCA and the remaining
$1,000 of their proposed allocation will be used for a student
handbook, which is a senate project.
An additional $4,000 for the handbook will come from a “slice”
in the athletic budget.
Improved health facilities on campus was stated as the biggest
reason for the many budget cuts. Sharp commented that these cuts
“couldn’t be for a better cause.”
