Somoza had already left Man agua by the time of the announce ment for a previously scheduled official visit to Panama. It was believed Hughes would remain in Nicaragua until the president’s return Saturday or Sunday. The Somoza family has run Ni caragua since 1936, except for a four-year interim. In his usual manner, Hughes slipped secretively away from his hotel in Nassau where he had been secluded for 15 months. A cargo plane carrying a hos pital bed, blood plasma stand, bottled water and many other items from the Hughes’ ninth- floor suite in the Britannia Beach Hotel flew early Thursday to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., then on to Managua. Officials of the Britannia Beach, who said they had never laid eyes on Hughes since he left Las Vegas, Nev., on Thanks giving Eve, 1970, did not know when the recluse himself left the island. The Miami News said it deter mined that Hughes was ordered to leave the Bahamas because he had stayed beyond the legal eight- month limit. A visitor then must take out a residence permit or leave and reenter the Bahamas. The residency requirement was not enforced previously, the News said, because the government could not confirm that Hughes ever had actually been in Nassau. The unprecedented telephone news conference Hughes gave to deny the authenticity of the Irving au tobiography established for the first time that Hughes was there. The Bahamas minister of home affairs, Arthur D. Hanna, who is in charge of all immigration mat ters, said in a statement that Hughes had not been asked to leave. “During the course of routine investigation,” Hanna said, “it has been discovered that non-Ba hamians allegedly employed by Mr. Hughes were in the Bahamas without proper immigration stat us and were escorted out of the Commonwealth by immigration officials.” In Los Angeles, Richard Han nah, publicity chief of the Hughes Tool Co., said he inferred from his sources that Hughes left the hotel Tuesday. A Hughes Tool Co. spokesman in Las Vegas said Hughes felt his employes should not be requir ed to obtain work permits. Teaching through television to he discussed at seminar Teaching chemistry through television will be discussed at A&M by Dr. John F. Baxter, who prepared several successful teach ing series. “The Knowledge Explosion, the Teacher and TV” is the subject of the seminar sponsored by the A&M Chapter of the American Chemical Society. The seminar will begin at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in Chemistry Room 228. He received B.S. and DVM degrees from the University of Minnesota in 1964 and 1966 and has been a post doctoral Fellow in the Nutritional and Food Science Department at MIT. Dr. Williams has completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. in nutrition from MIT and the de gree will be awarded at a later date. His fields are nutrition, pathol ogy and biochemistry, with seven scientific publications dealing with research on the influence of animal nutrition on resistance and susceptibility to infectious diseases. Robert Henrichsen, a December 1971 graduate of Sam Houston State, has been employed as an artist in the Dean’s Office. Henrichsen is a native of Bell- ville and single. Dr. Baxter will report on ex periences in preparing a complete course in high school chemistry for Encyclopedia Britannica Films, 160 30-minute teaching films and 160 30-minute television programs for NBC-TV’s Conti nental Classroom series. He also will take the audience behind the scenes at NBC. Dr. Baxter claims the general public does not understand the “knowledge explosion,” while teaching professionals at times are unaware of new teaching techniques. “Teachers are still prone to talk too much and show too little,” Dr. Baxter claims. The seminar is open to the pub lic. A mixer and dinner begins at 5:45 p.m. at the Holiday Inn in Bryan at $3.50 per person and $2.50 for students. Reservations must be made with Drs. Nick Pace or Ralph Zingaro by noon Thursday, Feb. 24. Dr. Baxter was awarded the Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins Uni versity in 1942. He has experience in both high school and college teaching, and heads the general chemistry program at the Uni versity of Florida. He has been a consultant for a number of television learning projects in the United States, South America, India and Thai land. Dr. Baxter is the recipient of the ACS James T. Grady Medal, the 1962 College of Chemistry Teacher Award of the Manufac turing Chemists’ Association and the 1969 ACS Florida Award.
