Fish to compete in drill
meet Saturday in Laredo
Texas’ top collegiate drill teams
including the defending national
champion Fish Drill Team of
A&M open the spring competition
season Saturday in Laredo.
Seven units will compete for
the drill championship, held in
conjunction with Laredo’s George
Washington Birthday Celebration.
The 37-member TAMU fresh
man team commanded by Mark
Roberts of Killeen will seek a
repeat Laredo championship. In
the Saturday afternoon competi
tion will be teams from Texas
A&I, St. Mary’s University, Sam

Houston and UT-Arlington.
Teams also will march in a
Saturday morning parade, among
a weekend-long series of events
in the Laredo celebration.
Competition at Laredo Martin
High School will include inspec
tion, basic and fancy marching
phases. A Marine Corps panel of
officers and non-commissioned
officers will judge the drill com
petition. They will judge the UT
competition and state champion
ship meet at A&M later this
spring.
Senior Advisor Louis Ullrich
of San Antonio said 35 freshmen
will march for the FDT this year,
the largest group assembled at
A&M. The Fish will march as a
separate unit Thursday on cam
pus for the SCONA XVII review.

Education. Dr. Robert I. Berridge
directs the center.
Community education was de
veloped through the Mott Foun
dation to provide activities at a
central site—such as an after-
hours unused school—for people
of all age groups. Industry, busi
ness, schools, churches, civic
groups and other local agencies
cooperate in the program.
The Mott Foundation-backed
concept takes advantage of the
wasted public investment of lock
ed schools. It opens classrooms,
gyms and shops for crafts, voca
tional skill learning, health care
training, continuing education or
other activities indicated by com
munity interest.
The Midland grant was drawn
from a “seed money” component
of the original Mott Foundation
award to A&M’s College of Edu
cation.
Arrangements leading to the
Midland grant were assisted by
Dr. J. W. Donaldson, director of
the Region XVIII Educational
Service Center in Midland.
Berridge emphasized that the
grant is of seed nature to help
Midland establish and support its
own program. The program will
be designed by the Midland di
rector in cooperation with local
groups to fit needs and interests
of Midland citizens.
Berridge stressed that the com
munity education concept does not
give something for nothing, nor
does it pour funding into a com
munity. Moderate funds are pro
vided only on a limited basis.
“A program helps people most
when it encourages self-help,”
the TAMU center director said.
“We usually just give a commun
ity a pat on the back and wish
them good luck.”
James McCloy
joins A&M faculty
Dr. James M. McCloy has join
ed the faculty of A&M’s College
of Marine Sciences and Maritime
Resources, announced Dean Wil
liam H. Clayton.
McCloy will teach marine ge
ography at the Texas Maritime
Academy and conduct research in
the Coastal Zone Laboratory.
He served last semester as a
visiting professor in TAMU’s
College of Geosciences at College
Station. He had previously taught
at the University of Montana
since 1968.
The A&M team last year won
the National Intercollegiate RO-
TC Drill Championships at Wash
ington, D. C. It was the fourth
straight national title by the
A&M team that starts with all
new members each fall.
Globetrotters
will appear
on March 22
The Harlem Globetrotters have
settled on the date for their ap
pearance at A&M.
The unique athletic ensemble
will appear March 22 as a TAMU
Special Attraction on the Town
Hall program. Chairman Kirk
Hawkins announced.
An 8 p.m. Wednesday contest
in G. Rollie White Coliseum is
scheduled for the clowns of bas
ketball. The Globetrotters will be
in their seventh appearance at
TAMU.
Fall semester schedules and
the A&M All-University Calen
dar showed conflicting dates for
the Globetrotters. Hawkins said
the change was required by a
strike of the world-renown team.
