increased commercial dealings be

cultural and sports interchanges
have also helped.
Mexico was the only country in
the western hemisphere to main
tain diplomatic relations with
Cuba after Fidel Castro’s govern

Organization of American States
a decade ago for trying to export
the Cuban revolution to other
countries. Relations between the

Rice wins
computer
contests
A four-man computer program
ming team from Rice won first
place at A&M’s Regional Pro
gramming Contest held here over
the weekend.
Twenty-two teams from 16 col
leges and universities in Texas,
Louisiana and Arkansas partici
pated in the third annual event.
Rice won the $100 first iplace prize
and was the only team to com
plete all three contest problems.
Second place and $50 went to
SMU, the University of Texas-
Austin won $25 third prize and
Trinity University won $25 for
fourth place.
A&M’s undergraduate team of
Jack Coats of Hurst, Bill Vasen
of Pasadena and Ian Kettlebor-
ough of College Station finished
fifth, two points behind Trinity.
The contest, sponsored by Up-
silon Pi Epsilon, A&M’s computer
science honor fraternity, was held
Saturday at the Remote Comput
ing Facility of the Data Process
ing Center.
Funds for the contest were pro
vided by the Industrial Engineer
ing Department, Data Processing
Center, IBM and Robert Smith,
past director of A&M’s DPC.
Members of the Rice team were
Mike Donegan, Randall Neff,
Scott Warren and Gene Mutsch-
ler.
Mexicans that perhaps Castro
was trying to interfere in Mexi
can internal affairs, running guns
through Mexico and perhaps in
volved in guerrilla activities in
this country.
“I feel there has been inter
ference by isolated elements but
not by the Cuban government,”
Maldonado said. “Fidel Castro
lived in Mexico and he knows how
jealous we are to the principle of
nonintervention. We are very na
tionalistic, so are the Cubans.”
Relations between the r two
countries reached their lowest
point 18 months ago after Cuba
refused to return airline hijackers
to Mexico for trial.
Mexico has served notice it
would allow the bilateral airline
agreement with Cuba to expire
and there was serious talk of a
possible break in diplomatic re
lations. The air treaty was event
ually renewed, apparently with
Cuban promise to consider Mexi
can pleas for extradition when a
plane is hijacked over Mexican
territory.
The Cubans were unhappy with
Mexico, Maldonado said, because
they believed Mexico was support
ing the economic blockade of the
island. The ambassador said this
was not true and increased trade
with Cuba has, he said, proven
Mexico does not support the
blockade.
Rare whale found beached;
first to be sighted in Gulf
An A&M mammal expert be
lieves the 25-foot whale which
washed ashore near Freeport last
week probably is a rare Atlantic
Right whale that somehow wan
dered into the Gulf of Mexico.
Dr. David Schmidly, curator of
mammals for the Texas Coopera
tive Wildlife Collection, said if
he's right it would mean the first
sighting of the Atlantic Right in
the Gulf.
The assistant professor of wild
life and fisheries science said the
whale was buried and the grave
was too deep for excavation over
the weekend.
Mrs. Roberta Dansby, news edi
tor of the Brazosport Facts in
Freeport, said a county commis
sioners court dump crew buried
the whale about six miles from
Surfside on the Galveston Road.
Two A&M students located the
grave last week and Dr. Schmidly
took 10 students to the site Satur
day to dig for the whale. Dr.
Schmidly said the tide covered the
grave and the shells over the site
prevented digging with picks and
shovels.
He will ask the Brazoria County
sanitation crews to assist his
project by digging the whale up
again.
Dr. Schmidly pointed out he
is interested in the skull for use
at A&M or it may be donated to
the National Museum.
He added the young whale ap
parently beached itself.
Photos taken by a Brazosport
Facts reporter have been sent to
whale experts to determine if Dr.
Schmidly's identification as an
Atlantic Right is correct.
Dr. Schmidly said Atlantic
Right whales usually go no far
ther south than off the coast of
South Carolina.
