Main 822-6000 Fish overcome fired up Baylor in 64-61 win By BILL HENRY Assistant Sports Writer Baylor gave the Texas A&M freshmen all they could handle here Saturday night before fin ally succumbing to the highly rated Fish squad, 64-61. With the win, A&M's record stands at 6-2 overall and 3-0 in SWC play. Baylor's own record drops to 1-5 and 0-2 in confer ence play. Both Baylor and A&M return to conference action on Tuesday, February 1st. Baylor hosts TCU in Heart of Texas Coliseum while the Fish visit Rice in Houston. Baylor’s success came with an intensive defensive attack made up of a full-court man-to-man press and a tight man-to-man defense. The Cub’s also worked the ball well, waiting for the good shot while the Fish ran a helter-skelter offensive attack trying to hit from the outside, which they could not do. A&M turned the ball over on numerous occasions due to the heads up and aggressive play of the Cubs. In all, the Fish turned the ball over 13 times, nine of which came in the first half of play. “We didn’t play in the first half,” stated coach Jim Culpep per. “We made too many errors and didn’t play smart basket ball.” The contest was close the en tire way with no team really able to amass a sizeable lead. A&M took the lead early, 8-4, but the Cubs came back to take the lead away, 11-40, two min utes later. The score was knotted 13 different times. The biggest Baylor lead was 37-33 at the start of the second stanza while A&M’s largest lead was 64-57 with :37 left to play in the game. The Fish took the lead for good, 53-52, when Webb Wil liams and Cedric Joseph broke through the Baylor press for an easy layup with 7:30 left to play in the contest. From that point on, A&M began to rally to its largest lead, seven points. The Fish began to go inside to their big men, Joseph and Jerry Mer cer, for offensive punch instead of trying to bomb the basket from 30-feet out like they had in the first half. “When we went inside, we could score because of our height advantage,” Culpepper said. “But they still tried to shoot from out side and it just wouldn’t work. The second half we finally be gan to go inside and that made the difference.” If the Baylor team needed ex cuses for the contest, it can go to the Fish strong points throughout the season, rebound ing and shooting percentages. A&M grabbed off 46 rebounds to only 32 for the outmanned Cubs. The Fish also hit 27 of 56 shots for 48% from the field while Baylor hit on only 24 of 59 for 40%. Baylor’s Tom Wilkins was the night’s leading scorer with 20 points on eight of 22 field goals and four of five free tosses. James Weaver hit for 16 points and Charlie Bassett, 12, rounded out the Cub’s double figure scor ers. A&M’s Webb Williams played one of his best games in a Fish uniform, hitting eight of 16 shots from the field and one of two gratis pitches for 17 points. Jer ry Mercer helped turn the tide by scoring 14 points and grab bing 19 rebounds. Cedric Joseph, whose knee had to be taped be fore the contest for an injury received in practice Thursday, saw limited action and put in 15 points while grabbing nine re bounds mostly in the second half. “This was a big win for us,” Culpepper said. “We had never won a close ball game like this. It was a real good sign to see the kids come back like they did in the second half and control the game. I was not real pleased with the way we played but I’m real glad to see us not give up when we get into a tight situa tion.” The scoring: Texas A&M: Webb Williams, 17; Cedric Joseph, 15; Jerry Mer cer, 14; Dale Donaldson, 9; Is- dell Birnbaum, 8; and Ronnie Cornelius, 1. Baylor: Tom Wilkins, 20; James Weaver, 16; Charlie Bas sett, 12; Gary Trentham, 6; Ted Cantrell, 5; and Buck Anderson, 2.
