7/y THE BATTALION Pacre 12 College Station, Texas Wednesday, December 15 iq„ ITALION —— ’ A&M swimming team to tour Brazil during the holiday', X'rrsr.ss Sm.™ sSS-SS By MICHAEL RICE Battalion Sports Writer When Coach Dennis Fosdick came to A&M to replace swim ming coach Pat Patterson in the fall of 1970 the word “Brazil” suddenly became a frequently used password by Fosdick and his swimmers. Although the swimming Aggies didn’t get to go to Brazil last year because of a lack of avail able funds, the trip is definitely on for the Christmas holidays with Fosdick and ten swimmers going to Sao Paulo to represent A&M. Fosdick has been to Brazil a few months before he came to coach at A&M and found the peo ple there as friendly as could be. The swimming clinic he did there for the Brazilians was a tremend ous success, and when it was time for him to leave they in vited him back on the condition he would bring more Americans with him, namely swimmers. “The people down there are just super-friendly,” Fosdick ex plained. “They want to know more about swimming and get to meet more Americans to find out what they are really like. Sao Paulo, the city we’ll be mainly around for the two weeks we are there, is the third largest city between North and South Ameri ca combined. I’m sure the boys will have a lot of fun while we’re there.” But the trip won’t be all fun and no work for those involved. The Aggie swimmers will be working out in various club towns around Sao Paulo. Santos, a beach town, will probably be the Ag’s first place to work out, with the cities of Mogi das Cruzes, Rio de Janeiro also on the list. Training twice a day is on tap for the swimmers with meets scheduled around the workouts. Some international caliber swim mers will be competing against the Aggies in both swimming and water polo. There is also the possibility the Ags may meet up with a visiting team from Ger many, which will be traveling in the area at the time. “I don’t know our full itinerary yet,” said Fosdick, “because the Brazilian mail service is some times very slow; losing mail is very common to them. “But conditioning and expert ence will be what we are mainly after,” he continued. “The trip will also provide an educational experience for the boys through the exchange of cultural ideas, particularly giving them a good look at Christmas in another country.” While the Aggies are busy working out, Fosdick will be lec turing to interested Brazilian swimmers and coaches about swimming. He’ll mainly be ad dressing the Sao Paulo Swimming Federation and Santos’ Univer sity of Physical Education and several other universities. Just how did the Aggieg ^ age to raise enough money f, the trip south? “The whole swim team earn the trip for these few by cleas ing Kyle Field after all the f O0 t ball games played in it,” la j Fosdick. Each swimmer put j an average of six hours hi work after the varsity gam, and eight hours after the Ten game to help come up withtl $6,000 dollars needed for trip.
