landry discusses upsets
of top pro teams this year
By DENNIE h. freeman
DALLAS <A > ) — Dallas Coach
Tom Landry believes the stunning
upsets rocking professional foot-
tall can be attributed to the bai
lee of talent and the era in
which we live.
J'Everybody will lose games
from time to time because the
talent is spread pretty thin,”
Landry says.
He adds “Sometimes the best
team won’t even be in the Super
Bowl because you’ve got to have
a lot of luck nowdays besides hav
ing a good team.”
But he suggests there might
be a more deeper meaning from
the roller coaster rides of near
perfection to dismal failure from
week-to-week.
“We’re in an era where the top
teams are getting beat because
it’s hard to sustain your momen
tum from week to week,” Landry
says. “I’m not sure what it is.
“Perhaps, it is the approach
to things of our young people . . .
They don’t have as much a driving
force as they used to . . . There’s
a lot of complacency on the ath
letic field like everywhere else.
We are in an affluent age where
everything comes easy. There’s
a tendency not to work hard. In
athletics, you must work hard
or you’ll get your head knocked
off.”
Landry is particularly concern
ed that some form of over-confi
dence might overcome his streak-
i n Er Cowboys, who are one game
away from clinching a spot in
the National Football League
playoffs for the sixth consecutive
year.
Dallas has won five consecutive
games in posting a 9-3 record. If
the Cowboys defeat the Giants in
New York Sunday they clinch a
wild card berth. If Dallas wins
and Washington loses to Los An
geles Monday night, the Cowboys
get the National Conference East
ern Division title.
“Overconfidence is always a
problem,” Landry says.
“We couldn’t be in better shape
when you consider we were 4-3
at one time,” Landry says. “All
we need now is one game.”

football rushing records Warriors want Barry back
NEW YORK <A>) — Cornell’s
bard-running workhorse, Ed
Marinaro, barely beaten out for
the Heisman Trophy, managed to
£rab his share of honors before
closing out his collegiate football
career.
The final 1971 statistics of the
National Collegiate Sports Serv
ices show he was a triple cham
pion on offense, leading in three
important categories — rushing,
scoring and all-purpose running.
With the popularity of the
Wishbone-T and other multiple-
option running attacks, the nation
never produced a more prolific
collection of rushers than in 1971,
and Marinaro was the king.
The thick-necked Cornell half
back averaged 209 yards a game
on the ground, better than 81 of
the 119 major teams could man
age. He averaged 5.3 yards a
carry, running the ball 39.6 times
a game.
His 4,715 yards rushing set a
national record, beating the old
mark of Oklahoma’s Steve Owens
by 848 yards.
The 6-foot-3, 210-pound Ivy
League All-American scored 24
touchdowns and kicked four extra
points for a total of 148 points
and a 16.4 average. In all-purpose
running including kick returns,
Marinaro had 1,932 yards for the
season and a 214.7 average.
The final offensive figures re
flect the running power of the
nation’s top-ranked teams, most
of whom will carry on in the post
season bowls.
Nebraska’s Johnny Rodgers
placed ninth in scoring and
eighth in all-purpose running.
Oklahoma’s Greg Pruitt placed
second in rushing behind Mari
naro and Houston’s Robert New-
house, and with teammate Jack
Mildren, was among the Top Ten
in scoring.
Lydell Mitchell of Penn State
was second in scoring with a
15.8 average.
Football dropped at UCSB
after 50 years; financial
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. <A>)
— The University of California
at Santa Barbara announced Wed
nesday it will drop intercollegiate
football because of financial dif
ficulties.
The administrative decision
ends the sport which started at
Santa Barbara 50 years ago.
Chancellor Vernon I. Cheadle
also said that Jack Curtice will
continue as athletic director, and
football coach Andy Everest will
have his contract extended for
next year, taking on classroom
duties. But the assistant coaches
were fired.
Santa Barbara posted a 3-8
record during the past season.
The decision to drop football
was a surprise.
SAN FRANCISCO (A>>—Frank
lin Mieuli, president of the Golden
State Warriors of the National
Basketball Association, reiterated
Wednesday he “will use every
device I have to get Rick Barry
back in a Warriors’ uniform.”
Mieuli’s comment came one day
after the Warriors’ owners had
been awarded a $1 million settle
ment of their lawsuit against the
owners of the former Oakland
Oaks of the American Basketball
Association over Barry’s status.
Barry now plays for the New
York Nets of the ABA.
“I expect one of two things to
happen,” said Mieuli. “One, Barry
will agree to come back to the
Warriors, or two, we’ll be in court
in March.
“His contract with New York,
which runs out after this season,
acknowledges the fact that he

Bailey to drive
in Texas 500
H. B. Bailey of Houston has
been assigned to drive Red Farm
er’s National Association for
Stock Car Auto Racing’s Grand
National entry in this Sunday’s
re-scheduled Texas 500 at Texas
World Speedway.
Car owner Johnny Crews of
Port Charlotte, Fla., made the
announcement. Farmer couldn’t
return due to a previous engage
ment.
Bailey, who last Saturday led
the Alamo 200 at Texas World
Speedway until rain forced him
to withdraw, has been a stand
out performer in the NASCAR
Grand American ranks for years,
but has not driven a Grand Na
tional car this season.
During his 10 year NASCAR
career, Bailey has driven in 26
Grand National races, including
a fifth-place finish at Daytona
International Speedway in 1965.
The 35-year-old driver will be
steering a 1969 Ford that Farmer
qualified in 18th position for the
Texas 500. The car was clocked
at 158 miles per hour.
