The Army team began the Ele-
,t Bowl with a long pass
and the Air Force finished
jjfvjth a late rally, but the Army
, the charity game, 21-20.
jt was a matter of one team
rinning one half and one the
]t ler, with the halftime score
14-6 in favor of the Army.
Larry Gallego was the leading
usher for the Army. The 6-0,
D5 pound fullback carried the
jll 11 times for 60 yards and
touchdown. He kicked off

Severn Smith took over the
parterbacking duties from the
jjnred Charles Rothe in the first
jiarter, and the 6-1, 175 pound-
i completed seven of 16 passes
igllS yards and a touchdown.
For the Air Force, quarter-
ack Benny Jubela was the big
pin, hitting on eight of 23 aeri-
ils for 51 yards and two touch
downs. He kept the ball 11 times
for 62 yards to be the game's
leading rusher.
Rob Rogers helped to spark
the Air Force offense, hauling
in four passes for 40 yards and
two touchdowns. He returned
three kickoffs for 75 yards.
The biggest play of the night
came early in the opening pe
riod. On third and 18, Rothe
rolled to the left and hit wing-
back Henry Ostermann, who
dashed 81 yards to give the
Army an early advantage. Gal-
lego’s conversion made it 7-0
with two minutes gone.
The Air Force seniors bounced
back, moving from their own 25
to the Army 33 in eight plays
and a penalty. They were forced
to punt, giving up the ball at
the eight.
Fourteen plays showed Gal-
lego’s running ability, coupled
with Smith’s throwing accuracy,
but the movement bogged down
at the Air Force 47. Jimmy
Schell was back to punt, but the
pass from center went over his
head, and he recovered it at the
12 for a loss of 41 yards.
Jubela threw long for Rogers,
but the pass was too far in front
of the 6-3, 187 pound flanker. A
pair of dive plays by fullback
Bryan Akin gained nothing, with
fine defense being provided by
Gallego and Mike Weynand. On
fourth down, Jubela decided to
try the wide side of the field,
but Tommy Potthoff caught him
for a two-yard loss.
Following an Army punt, the
Air Force drove from their 42
to within 11 yards of a touch
down. On fourth and one, Ju
bela threw a flare pass to John
Griffin, but he was trapped for
a loss.
The Army took over on their
own 15 and drove 85 yards in 12
plays for the score. A 36 yard
pass from Smith to Jim Brown
moved the ball from the Air
Force 48 to the 12. This set up
an eight yard run on a broken
play by Smith. Gallego sprinted
off left end for the touchdown.
He kicked the extra point with
4:35 left in the half to make
14-0.
Once again the Air Force
stormed back, but this time they
weren’t denied. A 15-yard per
sonal foul and a 31-yard pass
interference penalty helped them
along, but the touchdown came
on a four-yard pass from Jubela
to Rogers. Freddie Powers’ run
for the two-point conversion was
smeared, and the halftime score
was 14-6 with 3:13 left before
intermission.
Army countered with a drive
to the Air Force 21, where Gal-
lego’s attempt at a 39-yard field
goal was blocked. In the first
half, the Army led in first downs
12-7, yards passing, 191-26, and
total yardage, 242-35.
Army kept it up early in the
second half, scoring after an
Air Force punt. A 10-yard run
by Gallego, added to the ensuing
piling on penalty put the Army
at the Air Force 29. Seven plays
later, Smith threw to Brown for
the score, with 6:30 to play in
the third quarter. Gallego kicked
his third conversion to push the
total to 21-6.
Still refusing to give up, the
Air Force stopped an Army drive
after their punter fumbled the
pass from center, giving the
Army the ball 27 yards away
from paydirt. Gallego tried a
45-yard field goal, but it was
short.
Air Force went the 80 yards
in 15 plays. They were aided by
three big penalties. The first
was on a roughing penalty when
the punter was knocked down on
a fourth and 10, giving the Air
Force new life. The next one
was on a second and eight play.
Mike Machala rushed in to hit
Jubela for a loss of eight, but a
teammate piled on, changing it
to third and one from the 20.
Then, on a second and 10 from
the 19, Jubela ran for four, but
Garry Patterson drew seven for
unsportsmanlike conduct. From
seven yards away, Jubela found
Rogers in the end zone. The
quarterback fumbled the snap on
the extra point play, leaving it
21-12 with five seconds to go in
the period.
Punts were exchanged until
7:48 of the final quarter. The
Air Force then moved 66 yards
in 12 plays. The longest play
was a 16-yard run by Powers.
The score came on a seven-yard
run by halfback Spike Dayton.
The 5-9, 160-pound flash took a
handoff and went straight ahead
over left guard for the touch
down. Akin rambled over right
guard for the bonus points, pull
ing them within one with 3:38
to play.
After an onsides kickoff, the
Air Force managed to make
Schell punt, but the Army had
used up 2:29. Jubela hit Powers
for three and Rogers for 12, but
he missed Rogers twice and Day-
ton once to end hopes of a come
back victory.
