‘Great Pumpkin Autocross’
planned for this Halloween
A “Great Pumpkin Autocross” of the TAMSCC. It will be held

Club, the Halloween autocross is
a one-car-at-a-time test of a driv
er’s skill and car performance on
a specially-marked course.

Surplus candy
to be collected
for retarded
Surplus Halloween candy will
be collected again this year to
bring Christmas cheer for chil
dren at the Austin State School
for the Retarded.
Mr. and Mrs. James Robinette
of Rt. 4, Bryan, are coordinating
the drive for the eighth year.
Collected candy will be taken
to Austin Nov. 8 by the Robin
ettes for distribution to over 1,000
children who will remain in the
state school dorms during the
holiday season.
Mrs. Robinette said the candy
also will be used in speech thera
py classes.
“The amount of candy collected
isn’t as important as the remem
brance of these forgotten children
at Christmas time,” Mrs. Robin
ette said.

Hardaway’s Kindergarten, Crock
ett School, Sul Ross School, Hen
derson School, College Hills

Williams elected
as vice chairman
of commission
A&M President Jack K. Williams
has been elected vice chairman
of the Federation of Regional Ac
crediting Commissions of Higher
Education.
Selection as FRACHE vice
chairman puts Dr. Williams in
line for the chairmanship of the
national organization next year.
He was elected at the group’s
recent meeting in Chicago.
Dr. Williams, who this month
is completing his first full year
as president, is currently serving
a second term as chairman of the
Commission on Colleges for the
Southern Association of Colleges
and Schools. That association is
the regional accrediting agency
for 11 southern and southwestern
states, including Texas.

Electrical facilities have been
ripped off the poles, and lights
have been repeatedly shot or
broken out, or stolen.
Litter consisting of beer cans,
paper material, and glass has
been found all through the park,
down the cycling trails and in
the creeks.
Over 19,000 barbecue plates
have been served in the park by
the YMCA alone this year, and
over 17 fish fries have been held
by various groups. The park is
used extensively, and the van
dalism continues.
It has been estimated that 5
per cent of the people using
Hensel Park are guilty of wan-<
ton destruction. Another 15 per
cent are guilty of practices that
result in property damage or
theft. Of the remaining users of
the park facilities it has been
estimated that less than 3 per
cent do anything to correct the
destructiveness they observe in
practice.
“Right now, we can’t even keep
up with the destruction, much
less make the improvements,”
Weston added.
“The coordinators of the park
are considering locking the park
gates and restricting the use of
the park only to those who make
reservations. If the present trend
continues, the park may fall in
total unuse in a few years,” Wes
ton said.

WASHINGTON <A>) — The Su
preme Court agreed Tuesday to
hear a Wisconsin case involving
a college professor who said his
contract was not renewed because
he publicly criticized the college
administration.
Earlier this year the court had
agreed to hear the same issue in
a Texas case.
In the latest case the Supreme
Court agreed to hear the appeal
of the Wisconsin Board of Re
gents of State Colleges which is
seeking overturn of lower court
decisions in favor of David F.
Roth who was fired from his job
as assistant professor at the Wis
consin State University-Oshkosh.
Roth was employed in 1968 for
one academic year and was noti
fied in January 1969 that his
teaching contract would not be
renewed for another year.
Under Wisconsin law, state uni
versity teachers are hired on a
probationary basis and can be
released without formal charges
until they have achieved tenure
through four years continuous
service.
Although no reason was given
for Roth’s release, he contended
he was fired because he spoke
out against the university admin
istrators and regents during dis
turbances at the school in 1968-
69.
The U.S. District Court for the
western district of Wisconsin up
held Roth’s contention that this
violated his right to free speech
and ordered the university to give
its reasons for firing Roth and
to give him a hearing. The U.S.
Court of Appeals in Chicago up
held the district court ruling in
favor of Roth.
In June, at the close of the
last term, the Court agreed to
hear an appeal from the regents
and administration of Odessa,
Tex., Junior College against an
opinion by the U.S. Court of Ap
peals in New Orleans in favor of
