Nebraska scouting report
Cornhuskers can live up to top ranking |
By MIKE RICE
Battalion Sports Writer
The Nebraska Cornhuskers,
fresh from their stunning victory
over the Minnesota Gophers by
a score of 35-7, won’t be expect
ing any threat this week when
the Texas A&M football squad
moves into Lincoln for their Sat
urday afternoon battle in Me
morial Stadium.
Nebraska, led by Head Coach
Bob Devaney and his eight assist
ants, is currently picked to be the
number one team in the nation
by hosts of sportswriters and
fans in various polls. A point in
favor of this prediction is that
they have the potential to do it
without too much trouble.
The Cornhuskers were able to
throw 15 passes for 226 yards
last week, while churning out 185
yards in 48 plays on the ground.
The real mainstay of the excel
lent team is the quarterback,
Jerry Tagge. A two year letter-
man from Green Bay, Wisconsin,
Tagge was able to complete 14
of 21 passes for a total of 218

AUSTIN (A*)—Injured quarter
back Eddie Phillips threw some
passes but did no running Wed
nesday at Texas’ workout.
“He is improved but he can’t
run,” said Texas coach Darrell
Royal.
Asked if quarterback Donnie
Wigginton would start against
Texas Tech Saturday instead of
Phillips, Royal replied:
“I don’t know who will start.

But it more and more looks like
it every day. This is Wednesday
and Eddie still can’t get up on
the ball of his foot. I don’t know
if his pulled muscle can go.”
Phillips has a sprained big toe
in his right foot and a slight
pull in the hamstring muscle of
his left leg.
Tight end Rick Davis, who
missed the UCLA game with a
back injury, returned to practice
Wednesday and is expected to
start against Tech.
yards against a tough Minnesota
squad.
Tagge was assisted in compil
ing these statistics by his top re
ceiver, Johnny Rodgers. A 171
pound split back from Omaha,
Rodgers caught six Tagge aer
ials for 126 yards, making three
touchdowns along the way.
Among Tagge’s other targets
are split end Woody Cox, a 5-9,
167 pound senior from Grosse
Point, Michigan, and Jeff Kinney,
a 210 pound senior from McCook,
Nebraska, who stands 6-2.
Three strong runners lead the
Cornhuskers in the rushing de
partment, and Kinney is the fore
most among these. Last week, he
carried the ball 16 times for 79
yards from his left halfback po
sition.
Bill Olds, the fullback, got 54
yards on six carries. He is 6-1
and 215, from Kansas City, Kan
sas. A one year letterman, he is
a junior on a Cornhusker squad
with 19 seniors.
Gary Dixon, also a junior and
also a left halfback, carried six
times for 30 yards. He is 5-10
and 201, a native of Oxnard, Cali
fornia.
Two punters were used against
Minnesota last week, one a soph
omore, the other a senior. The
senior is Jeff Hughes, a 5-11, 196
pounder from Burlington, Ver
mont. The letterman punted five
times, averaging 38 yards a kick.
Rich Sanger, a sophomore, av
eraged 31 yards, kicking twice
against the Gophers. Sanger is
6-0 and 214, and his home is Ovid,
Colorado. He plays linebacker,
while Hughes is listed as an of
fensive halfback.
Defensively, Nebraska is
strong, their biggest man being
left tackle Larry Jacobson, a 250
pounder from Sioux Falls, South
Dakota. At 6-6, the double let
terman excels at the pass rush.
The Cornhuskers are not quite
as large at the corners, the end
positions, or at safety. It will be
necessary for the Aggies to han
dle these people if they are to
win.
The Nebraska team is com
posed of top athletes from all
over the country. Only 32 of the
87 member squad is actually
from Nebraska. The Aggies
must use their speed to the full
est to compete with the highly
rated team.
All in all, it looks as if the Ag
gies are in for a rough time of
it in Lincoln. With Nebraska’s
offense, which just won’t givet
the ball, and a tough, puniskit
defense, A&M may findtheyt
playing against a brick walltli
outclasses them in every depar
ment.
One thing is for sure:
Cornhuskers deserve all
praise they have been getting
