THE BATTALION Page 6 College Station, Texas Thursday, September 16, 1971 LSU looks tough again; out for revenge By MIKE RICE Battalion Sports Writer Louisiana State’s Fighting Ti gers, 1970 champions of the Southeastern Conference, will have their work cut out for them when the Aggies come flying into Baton Rouge Saturday. Utilizing the “walking I” of fense and the 4-3 alignment de fensively, LSU Head Coach Char lie McClendon will be trying to better the 19-12-3 advantage it has over the Aggies. Last year, Lex James handed Dept. H 32-00 Skillmon Ave.. Long Island City. N.Y. 11101 Ronnie Estay Coach Mac his first opening game loss, while giving the Aggies their first win over the Tigers since 1956. On the offensive side, LSU looks to junior quarterback Bert Jones to throw the winning com bination for the Tigers, while Paul Lyons, a junior letterman, will be filling the number two quarterbacking position behind him. In the game ag-ainst Colora do last weekend, Jones only con nected on 5 of 21 for 44 yards, and Lyons hit the .500 mark, throwing 3 of 6 for 33 yards. In the tailback spot, three let- termen will be leading the charge for the Bayou Bengals. Seniors Arthur Cantrelle (197), and Del Walker (185), along with junior Chris Dantin (184), netted the most yardage for the team in rushing against Colorado next to Jim Benglis, a 207 pound fullback with plenty of experience behind him. Also tough in the fullback position is senior Allen Shorey (180), who saw little action in the last game. In the punting position for the Tigers this year is the phenome nal Ronnie Estay (225) who is considered by some to be a good choice for All-American. Not un usually large, he is also known for his devastating pass rushing. Against Colorado, he booted his way to 275 yards on seven at tempts for an average of 39.3 yards, his longest being a 48 yarder. LSU’s ace in the tight end spot is receiver Ken Kavanaugh (187) who hauled in three passes last week for 39 yards, making him the number one receiver in the game for both teams. In the split end position is Gerald Keigley, while Jimmy Le- Doux fills the bill in the split- back spot. LeDoux had a minus one in the rushing yardage de partment against Colorado, while quarterback Jones acquired a minus seven mark for the game. On the front line for the of fense will be well-known faces such as Phil Murray (225) and Steve Streete (212) at the tackle spots; Jimmy Elkins (220) and Mike Demarie (220) at the guard positions; and Logan Killen (203) at the center post. On the defensive side, LSU is very weak this year, having lost three-fourths of the starting front four to graduation. (Senior Estasy, a 1970 All-SEC choice at defensive end, could wind up in the tackle spot against A&M along with his fellow squad- man, Randy Nicar (225). The Tigers have only one re turning letterman at the end po sition, junior John Wood (220), but he probably will be joined by squadmen Jim Gainey (205) and Skip Cormier (204), a con verted linebacker. The linebacker posts will pro bably be filled by Lloyd Frye (204), Boyd Perry (210), Louis Cascio (195), Warren Capone (200), Richard Picou (193), and Pepper Rutland (195). Seniors Tommy Casanova (191) and John Nagle (183) will hold down the starting cornerback jobs and Casanova could make it to All-American.
