■. ■— ; \ I, 1 ill THE BATTALION Page 2 College Station, Texas Tuesday, September 14, 1971 CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle Listen up u.w. dance called success “I just don’t know if I can stand it if you make a joke about our winning streak too!” Bulletin Board Editor: I wish to thank the men and women that came to University Women’s All-University Dance, particularly the men who lis tened more than danced. I am very sorry that only sixty-two of the approximately eight hun dred single girls could be trou bled enough to even make a showing at the dance. This was the first dance sponsored by the only women’s organization giv ing them a voice in the student government. I am sorry that your pho tographer was not at the dance a bit later. Instead of the pic ture that was seen in the BATT Thursday, you might have had a picture of the 439 paying men and 62 women that were present. The other University Women of ficers and myself thought the dance turned out quite well. I hope that at tonight’s Uni versity Women general meeting (Tuesday, 7:30 p.m., 3-D MSC) there will be more than sixty-two women that will come and show that they care. It would be very nice to see the many women that I have heard say “A&M has no social life” show up at some social functions or at least show up at a meeting and find out what is being planned. Nancy Evans, President University Women Tonight Electrical Engineering Wives Club will hold a tea at the home of Mrs. William B. Jones Jr., 2612 Melba Circle in Bryan at 7:30. Friday Organization of Arab Students meets in room 2A of the Me morial Student Center at 7 to hold elections. We can see how University Women thought the dance was quite successful — with the odds seven to one in their favor. Just ^vhat the 439 guys who paid their money to stand around thought is a different matter. Though the photographer did not have a picture of the crowd, he did wait an hour after the dance was scheduled to start before he left. —Ed. ★ ★ ★ Editor: This Wednesday the Traffic Committee meets to discuss the parking problem. I hope they have a better idea of the situa tion than the assistant police chief (Battalion, Sept. 8), who doesn’t know where the cars come from. Detroit may be a suitable answer for the K.K., but that doesn’t help the problem. Remember lots 11, 30, 48-B? These lots are now under the classroom building and the Me morial Student Center Annex, in accord with the policy of build ings replacing parking lots. This practice is justified by promises of huge parking areas across the tracks, a campus tran- Cbe Battalion Opinions expressed in The Battalion are those of the student writers only. BCSATV79 Available exclusively on MIDWEST VIDEO The CATV Professionals sit system, and a central concrete wasteland called the mall. None of these projects will help the current problem. The new lots, if built,, will be too far away for day students, so dorm students will be given the privilege of having their cars stripped even more thoroughly than they are now. There is no way to finance a campus bus system; even so, there won’t be any streets left to run it on. The mall will con tinue to destroy street parking in the name of beautification. The impending demolition of Military Walk is part of this process. The university planners have had a free hand in creating our present problem. Unless their plans are revised, we will have the greatest campus transporta tion fiasco on earth. To prevent this, the traffic committee needs to raise some hell with whoever authorizes buildings on streets and/or parking lots. A little more static may help find a more realistic and workable solu tion. The air hammers and bulldoz ers of Military Walk aren’t de stroying staff parking spaces. They’re moving day student, freshman, and Senior Row Spaces to Easterwood. Steve Terry Believe it or not, A&M’s park ing situation is better than that of most other universities this size. Most others don’t allow freshman parking, some even sophomores. There is planning being done to have buses of sorts running through the campus when the mall is finished. —Ed.
