Wichita State scouting report
Shockers are rebuilt, determined team
If Wichita State could give the
football to Randy Jackson and
run the bruising fullback 50 times
a game, Head Coach Bob Seaman
feels the Shockers could win
every game this season.
However, Seaman is a much
more conservative thinker, and
besides, he has an outstanding
stable of backs to go with his
senior letterman fullback. Jack-
son is something of a rare breed
around camp, because the seniors
could be counted on one hand.
Jackson, who gained 469 yards
as a junior for a 6 yard per carry
average, played in the first three
games of 1970 and gained 252
yards or about 85 yards per game.
The disastrous plane crash oc
curred and phase two of the foot
ball season began. Now, Jackson
Coach Bob Seaman
is the main cog in what Seaman
feels will be the best team the
Shockers have fielded since the
mid-sixties when they won the
Missouri Valley title.
Seaman’s optimism comes from
having about as full a stable as
you could want. Starting with
quarterback, the Shockers will
have a trio of them in Rick Baehr
(6-0, 175) from Kansas City, Mo.,
Tom Owen (6-2, 200) from Kan
sas City, Kan., and Oklahoma na-
Randy Jackson
tive Jeff Moore (6-2, 185) from
Marietta. The trio contains all
the elements of a winning quar
terback with each having his
specialty.
Baehr is an exceptional think
ing QB who does all things fairly
well while Tom Owen has a bullet
like delivery that causes receivers
to get sore hands after a prac
tice. Moore, a newly found QB
who spent last season wondering
what position he would and could
play, has livened up the battle
for the number one spot as he
possesses great running ability
but tosses the football like a
marshmallow. He still runs the
ball with the best of them, how
ever, and seems to locate his re
ceiver often enough to make
things happen when he’s in con
trol.
The rest of the offense revolves
around Jackson, however. His
knack of knocking down would-
be tacklers while carrying the
ball has insured a pro contract
in the draft upon graduation.
Don Gilley is the other back
in the offense and has a reputa
tion of running all around people.
He gained 290 yards last year in
just spot duty from his tailback
position. His specialty, however,
is running back kickoffs. He led
the nation in that department last
season for a while with a 28.3-
yard average in 12 returns. Both
North Texas and Louisville kick
ed away from him during the
season to minimize the returns.
Backup men in the backfield
are fullback Larry Hart (6-1,
195) from Junction City and tail
back A1 Lewis (6-2, 180) of Wich
ita. Both runners are quite ex
citing in their own right.
As for receivers, Bill Moore
(6-1, 195) leads the group. Bob
DeLaura, a newcomer, will hold
down the other end position. Back
up men are Charlie Plopa, Jim
DeFontes and Charlie Stoner.
Leading the charges in the line
will be three fine down men. Ted

Dallas quarterback
still not chosen
By DENNE H. FREEMAN
Associated Press Sports Writer
DALLAS OP) — Dallas coach
Tom Landry, as secretive as ever
about his quarterback plans for
the regular season, said Wednes
day both his signal callers are
operating at a championship clip.
“I’m satisfied with the quarter
backs,” Landry said. “I think we
could go to the Super Bowl with
the quarterbacks working like
they are now.”
Roger Staubach, the former
Navy All-American, and Craig
Morton, the veteran incumbent,
are vying for the No. 1 spot.
The battle is so close, Landry
said, “I can’t say I will make a
definite decision on quarterback”
before the regular season opens
in Buffalo Sept. 19.
“Something could happen that
might help my thinking” in
Dallas* final National Football
League exhibition game in the
Cotton Bowl Saturday night
against Kansas City.
Landry’s big crusade this sum
mer was to get the Cowboy pass
ing game well.
Morton is improved after an
off-season elbow injury and Stau
bach has shown signs of staying
in the pocket, a must under the
Landry system because the Cow
boy coach disdains scrambling.

lie Roberts, a 6-0, 195 center and
Charlie Harrington, a 6-2, 235
guard, will blast open big holes
for the talented backfield.
“I think those three are three
of the toughest linemen we’ve got
and probably three of the best
in the MVC,” offensive coordi
nator Chuck Ramsey gloats.
They’ll strike you and then hit
you again!”
Tacklewise, Rusty Featherstone
(who underwent knee surgery in
the spring) and Ken Bogden will
be on the firing line. Both men
are highly qualified for the job
at 6-0, 225 and 6-3, 220, respec
tively.
In all, only two seniors (Randy
Jackson and Charlie Harrington)
grace the first team offense, ac
cording to the final spring depth
chart, and that spells out inex
perience. It is misleading, how
ever, since the offense returns
11 starters and the defense will
return nine. All the players are
young and aggressive with a de
sire to make 1971 the best season
yet.
The job of winning the football
game boils down to this: if Randy
Jackson can run wild, the Aggies
are in for a tough assignment
come Saturday night in Kyle
Field.
