1971 Aggieland available in Student Publication Office
<
The first shipment of 1971 Ag-
gielands arrived last Wednesday
and yearbooks are available to
students who paid for them dur
ing the 1970-71 academic year,
announced Jim Lindsey, director
of information and publications.
Lindsey said approximately 5,-
000 yearbooks were received in
the first shipment from Taylor
Publishing Co. in Dallas, and an
other truckload arrived Tuesday.
He said students must bring
their identification cards to the
Student Publications Office on
the second floor of the Services
Building.
The 584-page yearbook is one
of the largest ever' assembled
for Texas A&M students and in
cludes a number of full-color
pages, Lindsey said.
Editor Jerry L. Boles and his
staff dedicated the 1971 issue to
A. R. Luedecke, executive vice
president of Texas A&M. A
1932 graduate, Luedecke served
as acting president following the
death of A&M President Earl
Rudder last year.

Engineering plans
teaching institute
A Better Teaching Institute will
be conducted for interested Col
lege of Engineering faculty mem
bers, Dean Fred J. Benson an
nounced.
The Aug. 25-26 institute will
be in the CNB Room of the City
National Bank in Bryan.
Talks, discussion and panels
conducted by faculty from
throughout the university will
cover the psychology of learning,
projects lab, student feedback,
lecture techniques, effective me
dia use, teaching creativity, team
design projects, self-paced in
struction and quizzes, exams and
grading.

Sociology gets
new faculty member
Dr. Albert Schaffer has been
appointed to the faculty of the
Sociology and Anthropology De
partment effective Sept. 1.
Previously at the University of
Alabama, Schaffer will be a full
professor in the department, an
nounced Dr. R. L. Skrabanek,
acting head.
“Dr. Shaffer will have primary
responsibility in teaching and re
search in urban sociology,” Skra
banek said. The new A&M pro
fessor also specializes in political
sociology.
Schaffer, his wife Ruth and
daughter moved to Bryan from
Tuscaloosa earlier this summer.
His appointment brings the new
Sociology and Anthropology De
partment faculty to 12 members,
10 of which have the Ph.D. An
11th doctorate is expected by the

The department was organized
in the College of Liberal Arts last
fall, from the Agricultural Eco
nomics and Sociology Department
and with the addition of anthrop
ology. Five of the present depart
ment faculty members retain ma
jor commitment in the College of
Agriculture.
Animal Science head
named society chief
Dr. O. D. Butler, head of the
Animal Science Department, has
been elected president of the
American Society of Animal Sci
ence.
The action came .at the 63rd
annual meeting of the organiza
tion last week at the University
of California at Davis. Butler
was vice president of the organi
zation last year.
Under his leadership, A&M
faculty members presented 28 re
search papers at this year’s meet
ing of the 3,750-member organiza
tion.
Butler has been head of the
Animal Science Department since
1956; after receiving BS and MS
degrees from A&M, and his PhD
from Michigan State University
in 1951.

Parking permits
available to staff
Members of the faculty-staff
were purchasing campus parking
permit for 1971-72 begining Mon
day. The parking fee remains
$15 for a full year.
University Police Chief Ed Pow
ell said the permits may be ob
tained at his office in the YMCA
Building any weekday or from a
registration team which will tour
the campus.
The team will operate on the
following schedule: today Engi
neering Building; Thursday, Aca
demic Building; Monday, Memori
al Student Center; Tuesday, Serv
ices Building, and Wednesday,
B&U Building.
Permits may be purchased dur
ing the entire workday at all sites
except B&U, where the schedule
will be 8 a. m. until noon.
