THE BM1I
A&M course helps Bryan policeman advam
A special two-week police ad
ministration course at Texas A&M
paved the way for a Bryan police
man’s Thursday promotion.
James Barnett entered the En
gineering Extension Service
course as a patrolman and left
Friday a sergeant.
The promotion had been pend
ing for some time, but Sgt. Bar
nett believes the training has
given him a head start when he
reports to duty.
“There’s a lot of information
presented here that I never real
ized before,” Barnett, who has
three years of experience, said.
“For example, I never thought of
a supervisor as a teacher, but he
must be. And I never took a hard
look at financing a department.”
Instructor Bob Austin said this
is the first time the course was
offered. It has been so successful
the Police Training Division plans
to expand it to four weeks.
“A student will only take away
what he puts into the training,”
Austin observed. “Sgt. Barnett
has put a lot into this course.”
Group problem solving and dis
cussions were emphasized.
Capt. Charles Phelps of the
Bryan Department said he ap
preciated the group approach.
“Our sergeants play a part in
staff decisions,” Phelps said. “We
also delegate responsibility to
them, making supervisors a part
of the administration team.”
Barnett gave up a better pay
ing job with Lone Star Gas Co.
to enter police work full time.
He had been a reserve patrol
man in Bryan for three years be
fore he was moved by the com
pany to Mexia as supervisor. As
a reserve patrolman, Barnett
spent approximately 20 hours a
week on patrol, Phelps said.
The new sergeant said he miss
ed police work, so he returned to
Bryan in September 1968, to join
the department at a big pay cut.
Phelps contends it was Bryan’s
gain.
