Prof. Fred E. Smith ends 23
years of teaching at A&M this
week with the belief today’s stu
dent is not any different from
students of his generation.
Recognized twice for outstand
ing teaching, the professor of
geology and geophysics admits,
“I always try to put myself in
a student’s shoes and look upon
each student as a unique indi
vidual.”
“I can’t see any difference be
tween the student now and stu
dents 45 years ago,” he maintains.
Smith claims teachers “are
born.” He said a teacher must
show enthusiasm, knowledge of
his subject and tolerance.
“Demanding but understand
ing,” he suggests.
Prof. Smith is considered an
authority on the geology of Texas
and Gulf coast areas. He is a
retired Air Force Reserve major
and worked in industry before
joining the teaching ranks.
His teaching excellence was
recognized in 1969 with the A&M
Association of Former Students’
Faculty Distinguished Achieve
ment Teaching Award and the
Civilian Student Council’s Fac
ulty-Student Relations Award.
During the past 10 years the
noted paleontologist conducted the
National Science Foundation Ge
ology Institute for exceptional
high school students at A&M.
His work wtih the high school
students resulted in many of the
students enrolling at A&M for
degree studies.
A colleague remarked A&M has
registered 12 to 15 of these NSF
students each year that prob
ably would not have attended ex
cept for Prof. Smith’s leadership.
“These high school students
are my greatest contribution to
the university,” Smith maintains.
Smith wanted to be a geologist
all his life. As a boy on the
Texas ranch he would find fossils
and take them to school.
Smith volunteered during
World War II and served as an
administrative officer in Texas
and with the 8th Air Force in
England.
He joined Union Producing
Co. after the war and came to
A&M in 1948 to teach.
He was recalled to active duty
during the Korean conflict and
after finishing the Air University
was assigned as an air science
professor at the University of
Southern California.
Smith returned to A&M in
1953. Two years ago he became
assistant dean of the College of
Geosciences.
His extensive mineral collec
tion and fossil collection dates
back millions of years. He is
credited with making “rock
hounds” out of most of his stu
dents.
Some of his oyster shell collec
tion dates back 60 million years.
