Women and men already are at work on vests, belts, ties. And they now are get ting instructions from Miss Riv ers on how to make slacks. “Making neckties is one of the biggest sewing bits right now, particularly among teen-agers who are sewing for boyfriends,” she explains. “They also are mak ing belts and all kinds of vests— fake furs, leather, knit—and they want to know how to make slacks.” Since the early forties Miss Rivers has been a leading en thusiast in home sewing. She has traveled over the world on lecture tours, has written a book on home sewing, and has a twice a day television program that draws more than 20,000 letters a week. “In Canada, where I was tap ing shows, the television camera crew was so interested in the tie program and asked so many per tinent questions that I based four additional shows on it,” she ex plains. Sewing machines are so well calibrated today that just about anyone can sew, she points out, and even 10-year-olds are making pants suits. “Poor quality and the high cost of ready-to-wear women’s clothes caused the home-sewing boom,” Miss Rivers says. “Women could n’t find good clothes at prices they could afford, so they made their own clothes. Price is no object when they buy fabric. They’ll pay $12 a yard for it be cause they know there will be a quality look. Knits are the sewing rage right now because with IV2 yards of the 60-inch fabric you can put a good dress in the ward robe for around $20.” At the moment, Miss Rivers is BATTALION CLASSIFIED S25 I or FOR RENT LUXURY APARTMENT. Fortune Calendar completed By SUE DAVIS Last week a part of my story about the Oriental Fortune Calen dar accidentally was left out. The Year of the Boar was the victim. I would like to finish the story now. The Year of the Boar occurred in 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947 and 1959. Boar Year people are chivalrous and gallant. Whatever they do, they do with all their strength. For these people, there is no left or right and there is no retreat. They have tremendous fortitude and great honesty. They do not make many friends, but they make them for life, and anyone having a Boar Year friend is fortunate-—they are extremely loyal. They do not talk much but, like Monkey Year people, have a great thirst for knowledge. They study a great deal and are gen erally well-informed. Boar people are quick-tempered, yet they hate arguments and quarreling. They are affectionate and kind to their loved ones. They tend to have marital problems, hut work hard at putting things right. THIS YOUNG COUPLE will begin their mariage prepared. On their way home from the wedding reception, Mr. and Mrs. Carl J. D’Amario stopped to pick up a few groceries at a local supermarket. (AP Wirephoto) Wigs great time-savers for women on vacations By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS When the weather or a swim ming cap or ski hat has made the special wedding hairdo go plop, the solution is wigs, true honey moon savers. Used like cosmetics, a wig can quickly make a beauty out of a windswept bride. Wigs in the suit case allows a girl to take a care free plunge into that inviting pool instead of merely twiddling her toes in it. With a hairpiece in reserve, the bride can walk happily through a snow-storm and still look elegant the same eve ning. This year’s honeymooner does n’t even have to be bothered with the special care wigs demanded a while back. Real hair wigs are lovely but expensive and fragile and require almost the same pro fessional attention as the ladies’ own hair. The new moderately- priced wigs of American-made synthetic fiber look, feel and act as beautiful hair should. Brides packing for the wedding trip can take along Dynel wigs in several styles. Rolling or squash ing won’t spoil these permanently prestyled pretenders, so goodbye bulky wig boxes. The miracle of these wigs is that they can be brushed differ ent ways and hold each style, and can be shampooed and drip-dried to emerge looking freshly set. Hairspray buildup requires just an occasional swish through cool, soapy water to disappear. They are so unbelievably real even your best friend can’t tell you’re wear ing one. She’s probably wearing one herself. The most practical color to choose is one matching your own, to agree with your makeup and wardrobe. But an extra wig in a completely different shade is fun. Colors in Dynel wigs inch from palest platinum to black, with a multitude of blonde and frosted shades, and several new tones in the red family. Styles are pre set in every current fashion: straight, wavy, curly, Afro, short, medium and long. The new wigs are comfortable stretch jobs that stay firmly in place without squeezing the head. If you keep your wig on a weight less styrofoam form, close a drawer on the base of the form and it will hold firm while you brush it. Neither weather nor lack of talent with hair-setting need bother the modern bride. Not when somewhere in the brand new set of luggage a few no-care wigs have joined the honeymoon.
