Annex becoming small university
Operations through the Engi
neering Extension Service at the
Research Annex have grown to
the point enrollments resemble
a small university.
Through the leadership of EES
Director H. D. Bearden, two Re
search Annex extension schools
currently average eight to 12
classes each week with class
length from one to eight weeks
each.
The Telephone Technicians
Training, Electric Line Crews
Training and CATV Training pro
grams, all headed by chief in
structor Ed Kerlick, and the Po
lice Training Division headed by
Ira E. Scott project 1,330 stu
dents will attend Annex exten
sion classes during 1971-72.
Kerlick maintains these courses
have a tremendous economic im-
the air base converted for A&M’s
use.
Kerlick said activity at the an
nex is near peak this week. EES
staff instructors are broken into
two classes for a week’s session
to fulfill vocational teacher cer
tification requirements. There
also are three telephone techni
cians courses and one line crew
class. Next week a cable an
tenna television (CATV) techni
cian class reports.
At the same time, the Institute
of Electronic Science, an 18-
month technical program, has
three classes with 68 students for
the spring session.
Kerlick projected 1971-72
classes would include 160 CATV
students, 130 attending linemen
school, 650 telephone technicians
and 390 enrolled in Police courses,
all at the Research Annex.
Although all programs are
underwritten by training commit
tees from the industries or pro
fessions, Kerlick pointed out no
state funds can be spent to pro
vide housing for the classes.
for expenses.
Kerlick estimated the short
course enrollment would just
about double within the next five
years.
And with the Annex located
12 miles from the campus, there
is a transportation problem, he
added.
Kerlick reports the 1971-72
budgets approved by his three
training committees include
$139,000 for telephone classes,
$39,000 for the CATV program
and $163,000 for the electric line
men. Of that amount, $289,000
comes directly from industry and
the remainder is reimbursements
pact on the university and Bryan-
College Station area.
“We estimate the average class
spends 12 class nights here,”
Kerlick said. “This means the
extension courses produce 15,960
nights lodgings in this area, and
about three times as many
meals.”
Almost all the people attend
ing the courses use commercial
motels and hotels, although the
Navajo Indian students enrolled
in the telephone courses stay in
univefsity-furnished rooms in the
former enlisted men’s barracks at
