Sugihara has been named director of the Cyclo tron Institute as part of an ad ministrative reorganization trans ferring the nuclear facility to the College of Science. A&M President Dr. Jack K. Williams said the reorganization will simplify administrative pro cedures and allow Dr. A. D. Suttle Jr., vice president for research, to devote more time to resource development. Suttle has served as institute director since the construction phase of the $6 million installa tion. The facility was formally dedicated Dec. 4, 1967. “In view of the continued scar city of research funds throughout the nation,” Williams said, “we need Suttle to spend as much time and energy as possible in this one endeavor to sustain our present rate of growth.” Williams also cited the “admin istrative simplicity” derived from the transfer, since the Cyclotron Institute’s faculty members hold joint appointments in the Chem istry and Physics Departments, both part of the College of Sci- The institute was originally es tablished as a College of Science division. Jon Ragland, Dickie Fikes, Mike Hickey and Dan Courson each won two singles matches and Tommy Connell one but suf fered the Aggies only loss as they improved their conference record to 15-13 good for fourth place behind Rice, Southern Methodist and Texas-Austin. In doubles action Jon Ragland- Dickie Fikes and Hickey-Courson won two doubles matches each. Saturday the Aggies whipped Tech 6-1 with the only loss com ing in the fourth singles match when Connell lost to Walt Ham- merick 6-4 6-4. The Aggies controlled the match pretty well although Joe Ben Whittenburg sent Ragland to split set in the first singles match and James Chism forced Courson to a third set. The other matches were swept. In the Baylor match the Ag gies clipped the Bears without any trouble as they dropped the Bears to a 5-23 record and their third match in four in which they were shut out. Skelton of Irving and Milton S. Shaw of Seguin were honored here Friday. They will be the first two of the prestigious President’s Schol ars to graduate, complete bache lor degree requirements in chem istry and physics, respectively, this spring. Skelton and Shaw enrolled in September, 1968, and completed undergraduate work in three years. Plaques featuring the A&M senior ring crest and President’s Scholar inscriptions were pre sented to the outstanding stu dents by President Jack K. Wil liams at a Friday steak fry. Looking on were 48 othei A&M students studying under the $1,000 a year endowed schol arships, 11 of 22 new President’s Scholars who will enter A&M next fall and university board and faculty members. Also attending the Hensel Park event were several businessmen and industrial executives who en dow President’s Scholars awards. Skelton, a 1968 Irving High School graduate, has a 3.53 grade point ratio. The son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. He is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, national fresh man scholastic fraternity; and Chemistry and Physics Clubs. A 3.85 overall GPR student, Shaw also made Distinguished Student every semester.
