Baker of Houston, an A&M graduate, was nominated by Gov. Preston Smith Thursday to the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System. Baker is chairman of the board of Mercantile Bank of Houston and a former member of the Tex as House and Senate. He was nominated to replace Manuel DeBusk of Dallas, who was rejected by the Senate for the 18-member board position. Baker, 49, is a member of the class of 1944 at Texas A&M. He worked part-time in an East Gate gas station to pay college ex penses. His education was interupted by World War II and he graduat ed in 1946 with a degree in eco nomics. Baker served as a combat bom- for 30 missions aboard B-24s over Germany. Following graduation from A&M, Baker entered the Universi ty of Texas at Austin Law School and graduated in 1949. Baker was first elected to the Texas House from Harris County in 1952 and took office in Jan uary, 1953. He served six years in the House and was elected to the Senate in 1958. He was one of the first con tributors of a $25,000 President’s Endowed Scholarship to A&M. The scholarship was given in the memory of his father, the late Raleigh Baker of Baytown. Mrs. Raleigh Baker lives at 105 Illinois St., Baytown. Four Baker sons graduated from A&M. They are Orville, aer ospace engineer with Bell Heli copters in Fort Worth; Billy W., a Houston builder, and Dr. Charles E., a Houston orthopedic surgeon. Baker’s oldest son, Stephen, is a junior in the Corps. Another son, Robert, attended A&M. Baker and his wife, Iris, have three children at home: Michael Wayne, 16; Marianne, 14, and Mark, 13. White said here Wednesday night he would favor legislation restricting sales of some types of pesticides to the public—^particularly the non-agri- cultural sector—in an effort to cut pollution. He also said agriculture has received far too much pollution blame through use of fertilizers and bug-fighting chemicals. Some of the biggest misuses are non- agricultural. “I feel strongly that we must not stand for any abuse of our environment and that measures should be taken to stop such abuses. “Not all pesticides, for exam ple, should be sold for general use. Some should be used only by licensed handlers and some only by qualified state agencies. I would support legislation estab lishing such restrictions,” the commissioner said. Purpose of the assembly is to recognize outstanding students, an honor professor, and to hear speakers on various phases of ag riculture. White said the Department of Agriculture is pollution and en vironment-conscious. The agency handles all pesticide formulation registrations in the state, and the chemicals are checked for label compliance. Texas’ herbicide law also is administered by the department. Use of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T is allow ed only under certain conditions. “These are examples of control measures being taken, in cooper ation with Texas farmers and ranchers, to assure that proper use is made of chemicals—which if misused—might pollute our en vironment,” the speaker pointed out. White was the main speaker for the annual A&M Agricultural Convocation attended by students and faculty in the College of Ag riculture. White hit at environmental crit ics whom he said have attacked modern technology as the cause of pollution. He said the blame should more properly lie with “error in our workmanship.” “There are simply too many benefits offered by proper use of BATTALION CLASSIFIED WANT AD RATES One day per word per word each additional day Minimui linimum chartfe—75c Classified Display $1.00 per column inch each insertion DEADLINE 4 p.m. day before publication FOR SALE 1957 Volkswagen. The commissioner called farm ers the “original environmental ists” who learned long ago they must treat nature with respect. “I think it’s unfair to suggest that farmers and ranchers have exercised anything less than care in use of production aids, such as fertilizers and pesticides,” he em phasized. “Much of today’s publi city concerning pollution of our environment gives so little credit to agriculture for what it does to enhance nature — and so much blame for what is wrong with the environment.” White said pesticides are “a clear benefit to society” and that much chemical misuse is non-ag- ricultural in nature. Statistics show that nearly half of all pest icides used in the United States are around the urban home and industry. 5 more cities (Continued from page 1) added to the persistent list, Greenville, Tenn.; Port Angeles, Wash.; and Allegan, Mich. These areas generally are more spread out, rather than surround ing a major central city, but some have more than 50,000 popula tion. “There are now 712 areas, in cluding the 50 major areas, classified as having substantial or persistent unemployment,” the report said.
