According to an article in the
Washington State school news
paper, the decreasing number of
ROTC enrollments seems to be
leveling off in both the Army and
Air Force programs.
In an effort to combat this
drop in enrollment, both branches
are instituting changes to make
the programs more valuable and
more attractive than in the past.
According to the article, a re
cent change in both programs was
a relaxation of standards concern
ing hair length of cadets and
allowance of longer sideburns.
Women cadets in the Air Force,
however, have no standard for
hair length, although they are
requested to wear their hair “up”
when in uniform.
At this time a bill is before
Congress to increase the pay of
advanced program ROTC cadets
from $50 per month to $100 per
month.
An increase in pay in the mili
tary services was instituted “to
make an all-volunteer army more
feasible.”
Joan Baez, speaking at UH last
week, said ‘Tm anti-country and
pro-people.” I seriously feel I be
long to one family—all the people
on earth,” she said.
She talked about conditions and
institution in America today.
“It’s not by chance I pick on
America the most. America is
doing more damage than any
other country in the world be
cause it’s bigger,” Miss Baez said.
She said students are trying to
be heard, but they’re not ready
to put their bodies on the line.
“You really have to get your
body in the way of the war ma
chine,” she said. The military
murders people; it defends land.”
She said students are too con
cerned with what their parents
and administrators think and
whether they will get their de
grees.
“You shouldn’t be worried
about getting back to exams; you
should be ready to go to jail,” she
said.
She said she believes there is
hope, that Americans are capable
of changing their lives and man
ners. “Until we recognize human
life is sacred, we won’t get any
where,” she added.

Two 21-year-old University of
Florida coeds claim they were
raped last Tuesday night in their
dorm room.
According to the UF police
chief, a female student called the
department shortly after 9:30
p. m. She said a white male of
average build had entered their
unlocked room threatening them
with a small caliber gun. He
was wearing a snow ski mask,
blue jacket and dark blue jeans,
she claimed.
The girls afterwards were
questioned, taken to the campus
infirmary, then to the health cen
ter where they were treated and
released.
The police chief asked that girls
continue to take “routine pre
cautions” such as keeping doors
locked.
