Aggie tankers drop first meet of the year
Gordon Taylor
By MICHAEL RICE
Battalion Sports Writer
The Texas Aggie swim team
suffered the first loss of its dual
meet season as the University of
Texas Longhorns splashed to vic
tory over the Ags Tuesday night
at Gregory Gymnasium in Aus
tin with the final tally showing
a score of 71-42.
The Aggies collected only four
first places in two relays and
two individual events. The med
ley relay team of Steve Prentice,
Doug Carson, Bobby Willoughby
and Tom Sparks swam its best
relay time of the season with a
3:41.3, and the 400 yard free re
lay of Gordon Taylor, John Mc-
Cleary, Eric Wolff and Mike
Hicks also had its best effort,
turning in a 3:21.2.
The surprise of the night
though was the first place win
of Taylor in the 100-yard free
style, as he swam to the tune of
50:5, which is a career record for
him. The other first place was
turned in by Wolff in the 200-
yard freestyle with a time of
1:50.0.
“We just didn’t swim as a
team like we did against Arkan
sas,” commented Coach Dennis
Fosdick. “We just didn’t have a
good team effort. The all-impor
tant concentration necessary to
win was definitely lacking. It
was like swimming just one-half
of a meet, because we couldn’t
put it together.”
Prentice, who qualified for na
tionals against Arkansas, only
placed second in the meet with
a 2:02.9, in the 200-yard back-
stroke; however, he did set a new
team record in the 100-yard back-
stroke leg of the medley relay
with a fastpaced 54:6. He also
placed second in the 200-yard in
dividual medley while Hicks
placed third in the same event.
Other outstanding times were
turned in by Dan Sonnenberg in
the 1000-yard freestyle with a
10:46.0, earning him a third
place; McCleary, second in the
50-yard free with a 22:8 and
third in the 100-yard freestyle
with a 50:9.
