Despite battery problems
Apollo 14 goes into orbit
With Bi f
84 6-973J
SPACE CENTER, Houston UP)
— Apollo 14 went into orbit
around the moon early Thursday
its crew primed and systems pro
claimed fit for man’s third lunar
landing Friday.
A worrisome battery on the
lunar lander was checked and
found okay, and Mission Control
told the astronauts, “It looks
good.’’
Alan B. Shepard and Edgar D.
Mitchell will ride the lander called
Antares to the rubble-strewn
mountainous Fra Mauro area,
while Stuart A. Roosa stays be
hind in the mothership, Kitty
Hawk.
The moon’s pull swung the
two-jointed spacecraft around its
dark side at 12:47 a.m. CST.
Thirteen minutes later, out of
radio range and flying engine
forward, the mothership’s rocket
engine burned for six minutes.
The result was to slow Apollo 14
by 2,000 miles per hour and put
it into an elliptical orbit 195
miles high, 69 miles low. The
astronauts returned into radio
contact at 2:20 a.m.
“Everything looks good,” Mis
sion Control said after Mitchell
conducted an hour-long check of
a battery which had been giving
a low voltage reading.
“As of now, the ascent batter
ies, especially No. 5, is go,” said
Mission Control.
Mitchell transferred power
from circuit to circuit, putting
pressure on the battery that had
been giving a low voltage read
ing. The tests indicated that
there was no apparent problem
with the battery itself.
There was no immediate ex
planation of why the battery
voltage reading was low.
Astronauts Stuart A. Roosa
and Alan B. Shepard remained
aboard the command ship, Kitty
Hawk, during the tests.
The astronauts were asked to
make the tests shortly after they
awoke from a daylong rest per
iod. A ground controller said
there was no real concern, but
that the tests would “make every
body feel a little warmer down
here.”
Shepard and Mitchell reported
the low voltage early in the day
when they entered the lunar mod
ule.
The readings themselves were
not considered serious enough to
affect the lunar landing. But of
ficials at Mission Control sought
to find out the reason for the ab
normal voltage level.
