THE BATTAU
Fish use fast break to overwhelm Temple cagers
By MIKE STEPHENS
Battalion Staff Writer
The Texas Aggie Fish, using
good shooting and an exception
ally fast break, ran Temple Jun
ior College ragged Tuesday night
as they recorded their fifth win
of the year, 97-69.
Repeatedly stealing the ball
and causing turnovers, the Fish
ran one fast break after another.
A&M finished with a 54.8 per
cent shooting record with Randy
Knowles and Bobby McKey lead
ing with 30 and 26 points respec
tively.
Falling and sliding all over the
floor while trying to steal, Mc-
Key’s hustle showed as he stole
the ball three times for layups
and helped cause several Temple
turnovers. Time after time, a
fast break started with McKey
and ended with a short jumper
by Knowles.
Temple led 6-5 with 17:17 left,
but Knowles put the Fish ahead
with a short jumper and the Fish
never relinquished their lead
again. Using a man-to-man
defense, A&M forced Temple into
numerous mistakes and by the
time the first half ended, they
had a 48-30 lead. Shooting 57.9
per cent to Temple’s 40.6 per
cent, the Fish also commanded
the backboards in the first half
leading 26 to 17 in rebounds.
A&M began the second half as
they played the first half; fast
breaking and excellent shooting.
But Temple went into a tight
man for man and pulled within
10 points at 72-62 with 5:45 left
in the game.
Going into a full court press
with five minutes left, Temple
then was completely outrun and
outhustled. A&M began their
fast break in earnest and out-
scored Temple 25-7 in the last
five minutes of the game.
With Jack Vest, McKey and
Knowles scoring with short
jumpers and layups, the Fish
hiked their lead to 20 points with
2:00 left in the game. With
Knowles hitting five more points
and Vest hitting four, the Fish
ran to their biggest lead, 97-67,
with 14 seconds left as Knowles
fouled out.
A&M shot 51.4 per cent during
the second half while Temple shot
only 36.7. Temple shot a cold
37.8 per cent for the game. A&M
also outrebounded Temple with
52 against 39 for Temple.
Danny Allie led Temple with
18 points and Julius Howard had
16 points and 11 rebounds.
The Fish had nine players
scoring. The scoring went like
this: Knowles had 30, McKey,
26; Vest, 15; Joe Arciniega had
eight; Johnny Mayo, seven; Mark
Stewart, five; Randy Pryor with
two, David Little with two and
Ken Bucek with two.
