system, said the new computer is
a PDP-15 manufactured by Dig
ital Equipment Corp. of Maynard,
Mass.
It will complement the IBM
7094 and gives the institute one
of the best computer systems for
an installation of its type.
Rogers said the 7094 will be
used only for large arithmetic
data processing. The PDP-15 will
gather data during experiments
with electronic detectors, process
the data while the experiment is
running and eventually store the
information on magnetic tape.
The $7 million facility is one
of the most sophisticated nuclear
installations of its type in the
nation. The particle accelerator,
commonly called an “atom smash
er,” is used by institute research
ers, several departments, medical
centers and various research lab
oratories throughout the South
west.
Experiments run 24 hours a
day, seven days a week, Dr. Rog
ers noted.
“The PDP computer was chosen
because of its outstanding ability
to input and output data at a
high rate directly from the ex
periment,” he explained.
The two computers will be ver
satile and able to serve a large
number of experiment groups
with widely different needs. Cur
rently the PDP is being used for
program development and will be
on-line for data acquisition in the
near future.

3 Dog Night
(Continued from page 1)
—Contemporary Arts Commit
tee (CAC) Chairman Robert
Riggs asked the council to grant
the committee use of money from
their $1,500 revolving account.
Riggs said the committee needs
$200 for a kinetic art film and
$50 a piece for film makers Ray
O’Leary and Phillip Codville, who
will show their films and talk
about the film-making process.
“They usually do this for about
$1,000,” he said, “but because
they are friends with a professor
here, they are doing it for much
less.”
Even though Riggs sought a
“yes” or “no” answer from the
council so he could plan a bro
chure of CAC spring activities,
and relinquish the ballroom which
he has reserved for Friday nights
if he is not using it, the council
insisted that he present his re
quest and financial status in writ
ing to the council first.
