THE BATTALION Page 2 College Station, Texas Friday, January 29, 1971 At the cinema CADET SLOUCH by Jim Earle ‘Cleaf' Day* U fitlC shoW By PAT GRIMES “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever" is primarily a showcase for the diversified talents of Miss Barbra Streisand. As a chain-smoker and reincar nated clairvoyant with extra sensory perception, Daisy Gamble (Barbra Streisand) faces the problem of being “healthy, well- adjusted” and having “no char acter.” She considers herself normal and is almost completely unaware of her multiple talents, save for knowing when the phone will ring and being able to grow flowers “fast.” As Daisy, she seeks the assist ance of a hypnotist, Dr. Chabot (Yves Montand) to stop smok ing. He opens the window of her past and the musical screenplay begins in brilliant color. Flashbacks of one of 144 pre vious lives interweave a drama tically sad tale with her present “go-alonger, little nothingness life.” She is the Lady Melinda Tentrees in 1814 one minute and boring Daisy the next. A one-sided romance on her part between she and Chabot de velops, but is ill fated. The pair must wait for their Virginia-bas ed life of love until the year 2038. Your cooperation is necessary for your picture to appear in the Aggieland. Vincente Minnelli, the director, obviously gave Miss Streisand a free hand in her character por trayal. She doesn’t miss a single camera angle and radiates the Streisand technique. Yves Montand surprisingly sings quite well and his nostalgic French manner lends to a sensi tive performance. A newcomer, John Richardson as Robert Tentrees, did a very convincing job as the gigolo. Star Jack Nicholson of the hit “Five Easy Pieces,” though in a minor role deserves mention for an off beat bit of acting. Aside from being a rather koo ky yet sophisticated production “On A Clear Day . . .” is a fash ion show for the ladies. Both Miss Streisand’s current (Arnold Scas- si) and period (Cecil Beaton) cos tumes are eye appealing. The musical is a study in color and particularly photographic ex ecution as well as having several good songs in the offering. An opening sequence of time lapse photography by John Ott is just beautiful. The entire production will de light the romanticist and encour age the mystic. ★ ★ ★ The Circle offers “Monte Walsh” and “The Cheyenne So cial Club.” Lee Marvin as Monte Walsh plays the last of a dying breed, the American cowboy. The story is relatively sad with painful reminders of an ideal, but hard, working life. Marvin is supported by Jeanne Moreau, giving a touching sensi tivity to the saloon hooker’s role, and Jack Palance. His charac ter’s transition to civilization is a heartfelt downfall to Monte. Monte, is left with his memo ries, a lock of auburn hair and his faithful horse. The musical score by John Bar ry of “Born Free” fame was a high point for the film and partly made up for the bad screen light ing that plaques the Circle. The two stalwarts, Henry Fon da and James Stewart, made “The Cheyenne Social Club” an en joyable western experience. It’s funny, light-hearted enter tainment and rated G for a change.
