The Patriots landed Plunkett, holder of the all-time major col lege records for passing and to- Dave Elmentdorf, Texas A&M’s All-American free safe ty, had not been selected in football’s annual college draft when The Battalion went to press this morning. The first round selections were still being made. Elmendorf was expected to be selected early, possibly in the first or second rounds. tal offense yardage, after spurn ing numerous offers to swap the top choice in a package deal for established players. Plunkett reportedly will seek a $250,000 contract. The Patriots who drafted first because their 1970 won-lost record was the worst in the league, have another high-salaried quarterback in Joe Kapp. The New Orleans Saints, pick ing second, selected quarterback Archie Manning of Mississippi, as expected. The Houston Oilers picked a third quarterback, Santa Clara’s Dan Pastorini. The first three picks were made within 10 minutes after the 17- round draft session kicked off at 10 a.m. EST at a midtown hotel. Commissioner Pete Rozelle an nounced the successive quarter back selections. The Buffalo Bills, picking fourth, broke the quarterback string with the selection of swift J. D. Hill, a wide receiver from Arizona State. As the New York Jets prepar ed to make their selection, Ro zelle interrupted the proceedings to announce a blockbuster trade in which the Los Angeles Rams dealt six players, including their starting linebacking trio of last season to the Washington Red skins. Washington, whose coach, George Allen, piloted the Rams last season, gave up linebacker Marlin McKeever, its No. 1 and 3 picks in this year’s draft and five more 1972 draft choices. Going to the Redskins are vet eran linebackers Myron Pottios, Jack Pardee and Maxie Baugh- an, defensive tackle Diron Tal bert, a 1970 starter, guard John Wilbur and running back Jeff Jordan. In addition to McKeever and the two high draft choices this year, the Rams will have Wash ington’s third through seventh picks in next year’s draft. The Jets then tapped running back John Riggins, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder from Kansas. Rig gins broke Gale Sayers’ career rushing mark at Kansas with a three-year total of 2,706 yards. At that point, Rozelle announc ed a second trade, whereby the Green Bay Packers sent quarter back Don Horn to the Denver Broncos in return for defensive end Alden Roche. The clubs also swapped their first round draft picks, moving Green Bay up from 12th to ninth in the order of se lection.
