BATTALION Tuesday, January 26, 1971 College Station, Texas Page 3 Fish rattle TCU Wogs, face unbeaten Owlets By JOHN CURYLO Assistant Sports Editor The Aggie Fish will try to keep the win streak going tonight when they meet the undefeated Rice Owlets in Houston. They play in a preliminary game at Autry Court on the Rice campus, prior to the SWC match between the Aggies and the de fending champion Owls. The Fish have won two in a row, both SWC victories, by downing the TCU Wogs 92-70 here Saturday. This brought their season record to 3-1. The Owlets are 7-0, having beaten the Lamar Tech freshmen 112-91 Fri day in Houston. Big guns for Rice include guards Scott Fisher and Kim Kaufman, the leading Owlet scorers. Fisher is 6-2 and is from Hermosa Beach, California, while Kaufman, 6-1, is from Muncie, Indiana. The other starters are forwards Keith Huff of Evansville, Indi ana, and John Kabbes, who is TRANSMISSIONS REPAIRED & EXCHANGED Completely Guaranteed Lowest Prices HAMILL’S TRANSMISSION 33rd. & Texas Ave. Bryan 822-6874 1970 TOYOTA $1830.00 BRAZOS VALLEY TOYOTA INC. The only Texan in the starting five for the Rice frosh is Randy Youngling of Houston Memorial. Once again, Randy Knowles was the big gun for the Fish, hitting eight of 20 from the field and 10 of 11 free throws for 26 points. He was followed by Johnny Mayo, who hit on five of nine field goals and four of five charity tosses for 14 points. He also was the rebounding leader with nine. In addition to his tremendous ball handling and play making, Bobby McKey contributed 12 points. Mark Stewart came off the bench to score 11 points. Joe Arciniega came through with nine points and eight rebounds, and Randy Pryor made all four of his field goal attempts to add eight to the winning total. Each team’s starters .totalled 67 points, but it was the Fish bench strength, contributed mostly by Stewart and Pryor, that sealed the win for A&M. Five Wogs, all starters, scored 10 or more, as they shot 41.8% for the game. The loss leaves their record at 1-3. The leading scorer for TCU was Mitch Alex ander with 20. He came into the game averaging 23. Bill Marano had previously been scoring 24 per game, but he only made 15. His rebounding was cut from 10 to six. Campus briefs The Fish got off to a quick lead at 7-1 with a little over three minutes gone when McKey hit on a baseline jump shot. By the middle of the initial period, TCU had caught up, leading twice, tying three times, and sur rendering the lead four times, the last being on a Mayo jump shot from the free throw line with 10:50 remaining that put the score at 17-15 for the Aggies. Knowles had 20 of his points in the first half, as the Wogs out- shot the Fish, 46.4% to 40.5%, but the Aggies made 15 field goals to their 13, and hit 12 of 15 free throws, while TCU made only eight of 11. A&M poured it on after the in termission, as they continued to raise the lead. Mayo made a fol lowup at 16:47 to make the score 50-39 and the lead 11, and the Fish were on the way. Following a Wog free throw, McKey scored on a drive to raise the margin to 12. With 14 minutes remaining, Stewart made a layup that put the score at 58-45. Following a Wog time out, Pryor hit two con secutive shots that raised the lead to 17. The lead continued to mount on drives, layups, and free throws, until the Fish found themselves ahead by 26 points when James Long hit from under neath with 1:28 to go to make the score 90-64. Time trials planned Plans for A&M Sports Car Club time trials at the Texas In ternational Speedway will be made at a Wednesday meeting of the organization. The 7:30 p.m. meeting will be at the old College Station city hall, 101 N. Church St., an nounced club president Tom Wedel of Houston. Wedel said the TIS time trials are set for March 28.
