Leading 38-37 at halftime, Arlington fell behind early in the second half as Pat Kavanagh, who had been held scoreless in the first half popped in the first six points and 10 of the first 17. Late in the second half after the two teams had tied the score at 67, the Aggies and Rebels traded buckets. Bob Peek, a teammate in high school of the Aggies’ Steve Niles, hit a layup with 3:16 to play but Jeff Overhouse then tied it with a layup after an assist from Rick Duplantis. Willie Spain canned a jumper to give the Rebels the lead again and then Hunter went to work with his free throw artistry. He hit two in a row and the Rebs were sitting on a four-point lead with 1:47 left. Duplantis again assisted in a bucket by Bobby Threadgill as the Aggies narrowed the margin to two, but Hunter was fouled and split the cords with two more to open up the lead. Threadgill cut the margin to 75-73 with a 20-footer from the corner with 50 seconds remain ing and then Hunter dropped in one of two to make it 76-73 and scorewise wrap the game up. Threadgill then passed to Du plantis for a bucket with 0:21 left to get the Aggies back with in one.* The Rebels then fired the ball to 6-7 Willie Elverton, who was fouled by 7-0 Steve Niles, and the two squared off momentarily but order was restored. Elverton’s first shot hit the back of the rim and bounced off but his second was good and the Rebels had a 77-75 lead with 12 seconds remaining. The Aggies failed to connect on the tying bucket, however, and absorbed their second loss of the year in three games. A&M now travels to Hofheinz pavilion for the Houston Classic this weekend with a 7 p.m. date with 18th ranked Oregon. A key to the Rebel victory was their ability to make the good shot count as Hunter, David Payne and Spain did the work outside and Peek and Mark Bur den did the damage down under.
