The Aggies led all the way in
the first half, but the Lumber
jacks ripped 16 straight points
midway in the second half to
take a commanding lead. With
Silas controlling the ball against
the Aggie press, the Lumber
jacks were never in real trouble
in the last five minutes.
Pete Harris had an outstanding
game offensively with 24 points,
but it was his improved rebound
ing in the second half that helped
the Lumberjacks outscore the
Aggies 50-41.
The Aggies led continuously in
the opening half except for a 25-
25 tie midway. They overcame
first-game jitters of nine turn
overs with a 19-11 rebound edge
and 55.2 shooting percentage.
Three times in the first half
the Aggies managed a six-point
margin but each time, with Silas
leading the way, the ’Jacks kept
themselves in the ball game.
A&M was led in the opening
half by 7-0 Steve Niles, who had
13 points despite missing a good
part of the period with foul trou
ble. He also sat out more than
half of the second half and fin
ished the game with 15 points
and 5 rebounds.
The Aggies led 60-59 with
11:01 to play in the game when
Pete Harris was called for goal
tending, but from there the Lum
berjacks scored 16 straight points
as the Aggies went scoreless
for four minutes and 14 seconds.
The two teams traded buckets
for about two minutes. Then
Metcalf put in an entire new
team of sophomores Bob Gobin,
Wayne Howard, Jeff Overhouse,
Bill O’Brien and junior Rick Du-
plantis in hopes of starting a
rally.
But Silas went to work in the
waning minutes with a field goal
and eight straight free throws
to keep the ’Jacks with a com
fortable lead that outlasted five
Aggie points in the final 30 sec
onds.
Scoring in the game:
A&M—Steve Niles 15, Bill
Cooksey 13, Pat Kavanagh 8,
Chuck Smith 8, Rick Duplantis 8,
