High school students from
throughout Texas have been in
vited to compete for awards in
the 29th annual all-state drawing
contest sponsored by A&M's En
gineering Design Graphics de
partment.
Dr. R. F. Vogel, associate pro
fessor and contest chairman, has
announced that first through
third place winners will be select
ed in five divisions.
Competition areas are first
year drawing, second year work
ing drawing, isometric pictorial
drawing, architectural drawing,
and hardware design. A student
may enter in as many as four of
the categories. Contest problems
will be mailed shortly after Jan
uary 1.
Vogel said the contests have
drawn upwards of 15,000 entries
in past years. High school teach
ers screen the local drawings and
submit the top three in each divi
sion for final judging by twelve
faculty members of the depart
ment.

Friends of Library
new organization
Formation of an organization
known as Friends of the A&M Li
brary has been announced by John
B. Smith.
The library director said
“Friends” will function as a body
of interested bibliophiles, schol
ars and laymen who will assist
the library in obtaining support
for book and materials pui'chases
and gifts.
“Friends” also will serve as
good will ambassadors, bringing
in other individuals interested in
books and libraries, Smith said,
pointing out that most large aca
demic libraries have such organi
zations.
Membership is available in sev
eral categories. A student may
join for $2 per year; contributing
member, $5; associate, $10, sus
taining, $25; patron, $100 or more
per year, and life member, $1,000
or more.

Food services helps
local needy family
The employes of the Depart
ment of Food Services, with the
assistance of the Bryan City Mis
sion, have selected a needy fam
ily to support for Christmas.
A committee has been formed
to place containers in each din
ing hall and the Memorial Stu
dent Center cafeteria. These can
be filled with candies, toys, cloth
ing, canned goods and money.
The employes plan to collect
items between Dec. 14-18 and
present them to the family Dec.
19.
Fred W. Dollar, Food Services
director, said, “This is a project
the employes wanted to under
take. We all hope to make it
successful.”

Firemen’s school
starts Jan. 18
The Texas Firemen’s Training
School will begin its second re
cruit firemen school Jan. 18, an
nounced Chief Instructor Henry
D. Smith.
The six-week program will be
conducted at Brayton Firemen
Training Field on the A&M cam
pus.
Texas Firemen’s Training
School is a division of the uni
versity’s Engineering Extension
Service.
“This course is designed espe
cially for the recruit and includes
basic fire-fighting techniques and
apparatus operations,” Smith
noted.
Classes are limited to 16 stu
dents. Advanced registration is
necessary.

Debate Coach Robert C. Leitz of
the English Department faculty.
A&M debaters won five tro
phies at the Southern Connecti
cut State College Tournament in
New Haven in late November,
taking the third place negative
team trophy in the novice divi
sion.
A&M, the only representative
from the Southwest among 67
teams at the meet, defeated Col
umbia, Massachusetts, Syracuse,
Pennsylvania, Penn State, New
York, Wesleyan and Maryland
teams.

Marzec, forestry major,
receives scholarship
Steven Marzec of College Sta
tion, freshman forestry major,
has received a $200 College of
Agriculture scholarship in recog
nition of academic achievement
and activities in high school.
Presentation of the award was
made by William T. Sistrunk,
Brazos County Agricultural
Agent.
In high school Steven was a
N.E.D.T. Award winner, in the
Order of the Arrow, second place
in district wrestling, and in the
camera club.
The freshman is among i-eci-
pients of scholarships in a pro
gram in its second year supported
by A&M faculty, staff members,
and alumni to attract outstanding
young men and women to the
university.
