THE BATTALION
Cardinals outclass Cowboys
DALLAS, Tex. (A*)—St. Louis
dazzled Dallas with Johnny Ro
land’s 74-yard punt return and
John Gilliam’s 48-yard double
reverse for touchdowns Monday
night, crushing the Cowboys 38-0
to keep the Cardinals in the lead
in the National Football Confer
ence East.
Roland also rambled 10 and 3
yards for touchdowns in the na
tionally televised contest as the
salty Cardinal defense strapped
the first shutout ever on Dallas
in a league game.
The last time a professional
team rolled up three consecutive
goose eggs was in 1935 by the
New York Giants.
St. Louis now holds a 7-2 rec
ord with the New York Giants
in hot pursuit at 6-3. Dallas,
which won the old National Foot
ball League Eastern Division the
last four years, is 5-4.
A line-drive 37-yard punt by
Dallas’ Ron Widby set the land
slide in motion. Roland fielded
it on the fly and bolted through
the spread out Dallas defenders.
Roland shook off a tackle by
safety Charlie Waters to score
standing up with 40 seconds re
maining in the first quarter.
Some Mississippi riverboat
trickery made it 14-0 several
minutes later. Cardinal quarter
back Jim Hart handed off to
MacArthur Lane who swept
right. Lane fed the ball to Gil
liam circling left. Gilliam ripped
away from Waters at the Cow
boy 10 for the score.
Jim Bakken’s 31-yard field
goal made it 17-0 at halftime.
Roland’s second and third
touchdown runs came in the
fourth period. Roy Shivers
dashed 29 yards in the 21-point
quarter for a score.
The Cardinals intercepted three
passes off the arm of Cowboy
quarterback Craig Morton. Most
of the Dallas fans from the
crowd of 69,323 deserted in
droves early in the fourth period.

er, slipped to second after barely
getting by Georgia Tech 10-7 on
a last-period touchdown. The

JOE MAC KING (12), who filled in for Lex James in his first starting assignment of the
year, is met by Rice defenders Larry Walling (39) and Butch Robinson (89) in the Owls
