Page 2 College Station, Texas CADET SLOUCH La! ATT ^]2yovember 13, 1970 Making the films ‘C. C/ has little going for it by Jim Earle “That’s the most noncommittal football sign I’ve ever seen!” By BOB STUMP The sun shines hard upon the California highway, heating the pavement to an unbearable in tensity. Down the road go three easy riders on choppers that glide like skates on ice. In all their primeval glory, one of the freaks turns out to be none other than Joe Namath of the New York Jets, on his summer vacation and letting his all hang out in his first movie. Indeed, he may have hung it out a little too far and lost it. Football is a game that is won with a hit-to-kill attitude, and Na math seems to have carried this philosophy over into acting as he goes play-by-play fashion through the rudiments of acting that the drama coach told him about the last minute before shooting. I hope that after doing “C. C. and Company” Namath decides to stick with football, be cause as an actor he comes across like mom’s burnt, green apple pie. As C. C. Ryder, the infamous Hells Angel type, Namath slips and slides through the role along side Ann Margaret like an ele phant courting a gazello. The plot develops around the ever present danger of Namath’s old cycle gang, the “Heads,” whose endeared contempt for the out side world is displayed by a three wheeled cycle sporting a toilet on the back end. They don’t really use the thing, of course, but it certainly serves to shake up the establishment types and put a lot of laughs into the show. Coulter — Bryan (Located Beside Casa Chapultepec) How the “Heads” ever like his style is beyond comprehension, for Namath doesn’t show any of the traits common to a gang mem ber other than his shaggy hair. In fact, he is just the opposite, radiating the character of a man you would expect to find peering at you through rimmed spectacles from behind the counter of your friendly neighborhood grocery store and saying very nicely, “Thank you. Come again, please.” The producer, however, cast Namath as a cool one, gave him some very corny lines to read, built a Goliath sex image around him, and finally made him out in the end as the proverbial bad guy gone straight. The show has three things go ing for it: Ann Margret, Namath and groovy looking motorcycles. Fortunately, these are enough to save it from total extinction. Na math and Miss Margret go through a scene together in the raw that comes across neatly with the soundtrack and rather good camera shots. Outside of the name people that star in it, however, “C.C. and Company” is just another second-rate flick which doesn’t have much character as a movie. The typical cycle show scenes predominate, like the gang cruis ing down the roads, the gang getting plowed under on cheap beer and, the gang busting up an establishment cycle race. There is plenty of abandon and free sex between the twenty-odd guys and the gang’s four girls. Namath never seems to get with the part he is cast in. You get the impression of a real nice guy who is totally out of whack with himself hanging around with all those tribal bums. He gets better after he takes uj> living with Ann Margret. But if you can imagine what Truman Capote would look like trying to act as a football player and then as a coach, you will have some idea of the problems Namath encoun ters in this show.
