Making the films
‘Monty Walsh’ good Marvin show
By BOB STUMP
Lee Marvin has made another
one of his memorable western
movies, this time playing the part
of a Cowboy during the dying days
of the profession enduring a di
minishing demand for his trade
— branding cows and busting
broncs.
As Monte Walsh (also the ti
tle), Marvin is introduced as a
rough-hewn cowboy returning
with his partner (played by Jack
Palance) from the mountains,
where they have spent the past
winter working for a ranch. They
find the rancher has gone broke
and left town, leaving them one
month’s pay for their troubles.
Disappointed, they accept work
on another ranch and, for a while,
the movie concentrates on depict
ing what the life of the cowboy
is really like and why Marvin
refuses to give it up.
But soon the ranch is forced to
lay off three of the youngest
hands, and from here it is a down
hill road for Marvin and his life
style.
Palance is the first to give it
up, getting married and moving
into town. Next to go is Marvin’s
girl (played by Jean Moreau),
who moves to another town forty
miles away. And finally, the ranch
itself is shut down, victim of hard
times that Marvin cannot under
stand.
He is offered a job performing
as a cowboy with a Wild West
show in the East, but turns the
offer down, saying “I’m not spit-
tin’ on my whole life.”
There is the whole philosophy
of Monte Walsh, symbolizing his
attitude against progress and his
determination to continue the life
he was brought up to.
Monte Walsh exemplifies the
true cowboy, content to live only
the life of bacon friedi over a
sagebrush fire and cornbread
downed with burnt coffee.
The film shows the conflict un
dergone by Marvin in coping with
the fact that his kind is a seclud
ed lot, far removed from anything
in contemporary society. One day
at the ranch, he and Palance are
sent to the outer fringe to deliver
some fencing supplies.
When they arrive, they find an
old man mending the fence. He is
one of the “old ones,” a cowboy
past working on the range and
forced to spend the remainder of
his days doing odd, lonely jobs.
They listen to the old man re
count some episodes from his life
and, when he has finished, he says
“I’ve had a good life,” and bends
down to resume fixing the end
less fence in his life.
The incident forces both of
them to realize they will one day
face the same fate when they
too become too old for the range.
Later, during a round-up, the
old man comes galloping down a
ridgeline on his horse and is
thrown off to his death. All the
hands gather around the body and
mourn the death in their own sort
of way. One says that he lost his
head, another one suggests they
ought to go see about the horse.
It is a crude sort of respect they
have among themselves, but it is
very binding one and they all
share in it.
Lee Marvin plays the part of
Monte Walsh with a genuine
sense of realness and perception
for the part, and responds to his
situation with the intensity and
purpose that you would expect
from someone of Monte Walsh’s
type. The film is strikingly in
volving for a western, one in
which you get caught up in the
nostalgia and urgency of the
time it portrays.
