Chuck makes SMU a threat anytime Fish visit Tech tonight By JOHN CURYLO Assistant Sports Editor The Aggie Fish fly to Lub bock today in search of their first win to meet the Texas Tech Picadors in a 7:30 p.m. game in Jones Stadium. For the fourth time this year, the Fish are the underdogs against a team that had a good recruiting year and good size. Tech is 3-0, with victories over New Mexico Military Institute, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The Fish are 0-3, having lost to TCU, Baylor, and Rice. In all fair ness, it needs to be pointed out that the difference in all three games was either in fumbles or the size of the opposition. Also, only half of Coach Jim Keller’s squad are scholarship athletes, a majority of them backs. Injuries have plagued the Fish, mostly in the line. Mike Rigsby will start his first game at quarterback for the Aggies, although he has seen considerable action all year. The Houston Smiley product has completed 13 of 36 passes for 160 yards. He has only been inter cepted once. Joining Rigsby in the A&M backfield will be wingback Grady Harris, fullback David Standish, and tailback Pat Herring. Her ring is the leading Fish rusher, having carried 28 times for 157 yards and all three Aggie touch downs. Backing up Herring will be Gary Smith, the number two Fish rusher. He has carried 39 times for 126 yards and a 3.1 average. In the event that Eric Elkins’ injury keeps him from starting against the Picadors, he will be replaced by Hughes, who has caught six passes for 91 yards this season. The tight end will be Roger Gaskamp of Brenham, who has caught seven passes for 65 yards. The line has Keith Rice and Kevin Smith at the tackles, Rich ard Semands and Mike Cady at the guards, and Darrell Talia ferro at center. The Fish line avergages 213 pounds offen sively. Should Semands not play because of his injury, Bill Berg- feld will probably be his replace ment. On defense, the line will miss guards Tommy Roderick, Billy Williams, and Mike Stautzenber- ger, and back Chris Hentzen due to injuries. Starting in the line will be ends Kevin Owen and Marshall Jack- son and guards Bud Trammell and Ronnie Goodwyn. Rusty Pool will probably see a lot of action at end, as he has all year. Linebackers will be Charles Murphy, Billy Wiebold, and Van Daniel. The cornerbacks will be Charles Billingsley and Mark Benbow, with Bill Nutt and Green as the safeties. Nutt will do the punting for the Fish. He has kicked 22 times for 956 yards and an average of 43.5. His long est was 78 against Rice. The powerful Picadors have Jim Carmichael of Brownwood at quarterback. He was the state’s most highly sought prospect last year. Running backs James Mos ley of Lubbock Estacado and John Gamer of San Antonio Mac- Arthur are Tech’s running backs. Tony Gorman of Hereford and Andre Tillman are the big talents in the line. By VICTOR MOORE Battalion Sports Writer Seeking their first win in their last seven starts, the Texas Ag gies go after the impossible dream Saturday afternoon against SMU in the Cotton Bowl. The most heralded quarterback in SMU history since Don Mere dith in the late fifties, is Chuck Hixson. Hixson won his fame with his passing arm. With every pass he completes this year, a new page is written in the record book. In his two and one-half years, Hixson has thrown the football . 1051 times completing 607 for 6722 yards, needing only 330 yards to become the all time NCAA leader. Joining the passing df Hixson to a running attack has taken along for the Mustangs. The man to look for in the rushing department is tailback Gary Hammond, who in 110 attempts has rushed for 475 yards of SMU’s 745 yards gained on the ground. SMU Mustangs sets up in a basic pro style offense to give added influence to the passing game. An outstanding group of receivers has developed, to give SMU its explosiveness. These re ceivers are tight end Ken Flem ing, Hammond, split end Raymond Mapps, and Louis Scott. The offensive line has most of the larger linemen as seen in Bill Jackson, George Zoch, both tackles, excellent pass blockers, and two year letterman. Joining these two across the line are guard Harry Hargrave, senior center Bill Hart, and guard Ger ald Bowles. The big Mustang problem has been the defense. They were very inexperienced and lacked size when the season opened, and while their size has not changed much, playing clubs like Oklahoma, Northwestern, and Texas has giv en them the experience. The line is small only averaging 208 pounds with the lightest at 185. They are end John Jordan, tackle Rock Rollins, middle guard Joe White, tackle Vic Brittain and end Jim Ryan 6-2, 185). The secondary is fast and tough. Cornerback Pat Curry is a big playmaker. Last year, he lead the conference in interceptions with seven. Along with Curry there will be free safety Robert Popelka, strong safety Alan Ever est, and David Rogers the other cornerback. Filling in the gap between the line and the secondary are line backers, Joe Stutts and Sherwood Blount, who are hard-hitting players. They do a lot of stunt ing. If Hixson is as sharp against A&M as he was against Texas, when he completed 31 of 47 passes for 381 yards, look out Aggies. Since neither team has scored an overabundance of points the game should boil down to whose defense is best as the number one and number two passers in the conference face each other.
