Cobble of Pur due University, a noted nuclear chemist, will speak at Texas A&M Feb. 15 under sponsorship of the Robert A. Welch Founda tion, announced Dr. A. D. Suttle Jr., vice president for research. A 1966 Guggenheim Fellow, Dr. Cobble received the E. O. Lawrence Award this year from the Atomic Energy Commission. His Texas A&M topic is “Chemically Bound Neutrons.” The 44-year-old scientist has major research interests in nu clear and physical - inorganic chemistry, with emphasis on thermochemical properties of ele ments and their compounds. ★ ★ ★ A&M begins study to aid San Antonio Texas A&M has initiated a study to determine resident and tourist attitudes toward devel opment of San Antonio’s River Walk area. The study ties in with a beau tification program started in 1963 along the downtown section of the San Antonio River. Dr. Clare A. Gunn, project di rector professor of tourism-rec reation development in Texas A&M’s Recreation and Parks De partment, said numerous San An tonio residents will assist in the study. Gunn said the bulk of the re search activities will be per formed by Robert E. Couch and David J. Reed. Couch is an instructor in the Recreation and Parks Depart ment, and Reed is an assistant professor in the Department of Recreation and Park Administra tion at Arkansas Polytechnic College. ★ ★ ★ Visiting professor to host seminars Professor Gunnar Kulldorff, visiting professor at Texas A&M’s Institute of Statistics, will conduct 10 seminar lectures for A&M faculty and students Campus Briefs beginning Tuesday. Topic for the twice weekly, five-week series is “Estimation Based on Grouped Samples.” H. O. Hartley, institute direc tor, said Dr. Kulldorff is head of the Institute of Mathematics and Statistics and dean of the Faculty of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at the Univer sity of Umea, Sweden. The lectures are scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. each Tuesday and Friday for five consecutive weeks. The lecture room will be announced later. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Hartley said the only prerequisite is a basic knowledge of statistics. ★ ★ ★ Police Training staff gains two instructors Two instructors have been add ed to the Engineering Extension Service’s Police Training Divi sion, announced Chief Instructor Ira E. Scott. Scott said his staff now is at full force with seven men. The new Texas A&M employes are Russell Coleman, who comes to A&M from the Orange Police Department, and Kenneth Robin son, formerly a Randall County Sheriff’s Department deputy. Police Training Division per sonnel conduct on-campus and extension courses for law en forcement officers, justice of the peace organizations and private security officers. ★ ★ ★ Research group gets $15,000 in new funds Theoretical research in the area of shell analysis being con ducted by a Texas A&M aero space engineering group headed by Dr. James A. Stricklin will be continued with $15,000 in ad ditional funding from Sandia Corporation, Albuquerque. The award to the Texas Engi neering Experiment Station was made through the Texas A&M Research Foundation. Stricklin said the researchers will seek the analysis technique best suited for solving the plas ticity problem with finite element methods. Working with the principal in vestigator are Walter E. Haisler, assistant professor, and Dennis Deel, graduate student in aero space engineering. ★ ★ ★ Bricklaying trade to get boost Texas A&M!s Engineering Ex tension Service has begun a new program aimed at upgrading the state bricklaying apprentice training. Coordinator for the Texas State Bricklayers Apprentice and Mason Training Program is Gil bert B. Cook of Dallas. Cook said the objective is to start apprentice programs to “in crease the number of apprentices on a well balanced basis year after year to meet the needs of industry.” He said the average Texas bricklayer is 45 years old, ex tremely high for a growing state. Currently there are seven re lated classes and seven vocation al schools teaching bricklaying. Related classes are those where the apprentice spends a regular work week on-the-job and four hours each week in classes con ducted by the union. ★ ★ ★ Class of 1940 plans weekend reunion Members of Texas A&M’s 1940 class will hold their 30th anni versary reunion this weekend.
